Subject: To gym or not to gym?

Maybe the real question is, do I work hard at the gym or take it easier.

Their are lots of topics that talk about Triathlons with its three different sports and most individuals are stronger at 1 or 2 of the three and that they should work more on the ones they are not strong at etc.

To me, coming into this sport(I did not compete in any yet, just started training for the next season), my strongest sport to me is the gym. I have been going to the gym for years and when I go to the gym, I go home sore no matter what.

I think that it might be taking away from my other main sports, because sometimes I am too sore to go running or biking, or I am just a little too sore and I just brush off my training.

Does anyone else have this same issue? I mean I don`t want to stop going to the gym, and I want to keep gaining in strength, but is it really helping me that much to get stronger? I know that getting bigger mulcular wise probably isn`t helping me any, but I am getting a bit bigger and stronger...especially in the legs.

Any input/personal situations would be great!

Thanks

Miguel

I think I pretty much found my answer after searching, this can be deleted or just left alone

Thanks

Strengt training is something I am not going to give up. It is a completely different type of feeling for me than I get from S/B/r. I realize that I could probably optimize my SBR training if I gave up my three times a week strength training, but it is not something I am willing to give up. I am like you - I don't leave the gym without being sore! I love that feeling though!

I hear ya, I don`t think I could ever give it up...not totally anyway. Being in my first winter of training for Triathlons I won`t slow down any and try to get in my best shape for endurance and strength.

Once I get through my first summer season of Triathlons i`ll make a decision whether or not I will slow down on the gym or not. I have read many debates on this and it is a personal decision but if you want to become much more competitive in this sport you have to concentrate more on your 3 main sports to build your overall endurance.

Yeah, and a lot depends on what distance triathlon you are going to try for. I have only done sprints and oly distances so far. Next year, I will be competing in my first 1/2 IM. I realize I will probably need to cut back to two times per week of strength training while preparing for this distance. I have found the strength gained especially in the legs and lats really helps my performance in races, though.

Yeah good point on the distance differences. I have a feeling that I am going to stay in the sprint and oly distances for the most part and probably try a HIM in the next few years but I can`t see myself sticking with the longer ones.

I have been noticing a huge difference in my legs as well. I am going to start doing alot more core workouts as well as that is a huge difference to help you move as on and not have to strain your body to work your upper and lower body together.
