Subject: Need some advice

I'm doing my first sprint triathalon on Sept 27 and have only begun working out a week or so ago.  I'm athletic, but have not done any cardio in a year.  I'm 36 years old and a pretty good swimmer, technique wise.  I believe I could complete the race w/o training but I'd like to finish as best I can.  I need advice on the 3 weeks I have left to train.  All the workouts on this site are for people who are smart and disciplined enough to train for months prior to the race, I obviously am not that bright.

Thanks - Rob

You are smart enough to ask for advice , and congrats on signing up for your first tri! Welcome to BT!

You really only have one week left to train ... you won't make any significant physical adaptations in the two weeks prior to the race. Your body just doesn't have enough time to make them.

And in one week, there isn't much you can do.

The general advice for most people doing their first tri, even if they have trained for months, is simply to have fun and finish. That way, you are nearly guaranteed a good first tri experience.

In your case, that goes doubly so. There isn't any way or any time to "finish as best I can." Be happy to participate, to simply finish, and proud that you've taken it upon yourself to do a tri!

Run and Bike every other day for the next three weeks, get in a few swims so you know how to pace yourself through the swim. Don't do any killer workouts the last 4/5 days. Take one or two days off before the race. Race, have a ball.

You have given no information to your current bike/run fitness so we can't advise on how much or how hard.

The only thing I have to add would be to do at least a couple of "brick" workouts, where you bike and then immediately go running afterwards, so that you get a feel for what it will be like in a race. Your legs will feel like rubber at first and a race is not the place for you to feel this phenomenon for the first time. I doesn't have to be long; even a 5 minute run after getting off the bike will let you know what I'm talking about.

Good luck and welcome to BT!

Since you're athletic, young, w/good swimming technique and it's just a sprint, I'd just simulate the race as many times as possible before 9/27. First time do it really easy and increase your effort a bit each time. Then take 2-3 days off before the race and go as hard as possible on race day. You'll know you can do the distance easily and you'll know how hard to push each leg. You'll naturally go faster on race day than your best simulation.
