Generally speaking, it is more expensive to do your own build than to buy complete from the manufacturer or LBS.  Additionally, there are fewer compatability issues when buying a complete package, something you might not know about when you are building your own. Saying that, I've done it and my best advice: be PATIENT and be SMART; don't let emotion rule your descision making.

prokikekit.com has some amazing discounts on complete component packages - check them out (prices and stock vary) because I've found them to have cheaper prices for new components that what you can get used on ebay, but discovered this after the fact

Hard to give a price for a complete build because there are all the other necessities you didn't mention like seatpost, saddle, stem, etc and prices for cheap aluminum to expensive carbon can jack up the price; you don't want to go cheap on the rest of the build if you're outfitting with Ultegra, but you certainly don't need top-of-the-line either. When you say Ultegra, are you meaning a full gruppo? And is this a road or tri configuration?

I just finished my 10sp tri build, taking me about a year to get it where it is now and I'm calling it done.  Here's my spec list and my cost, from memory:

Ultegra SL f. derraileur (new-ebay): $35

Ultegra SL r. derraileur (new-ebay) $75

Dura Ace bar end shifters (used ST) -$50

FSA SL-K carbon cranks (used -ebay) $110

Crank Brother's Quattro pedals (used-ebay) $45

Rotor aero TT Q-rings 54-42 (new) $120

Oval Concepts adjustable stem (new-ebay) $45

Oval Concepts A701 cockpit (used-BT) $150

Oval Concepts carbon brake levers (new-ebay) $60

Oval Concepts A900 aero brake calipers (pair-used-ebay) $100

Ultegra cassette (new-ebay) $49

Dura Ace chain (new-ebay) $19

Cost for LBS to completely build up, including cost of cables, bar tape and installing my computer: $60

I might be a bit off on some of the pricing, but I did keep a final tally and I know that all told, I built up my Javelin Arcole frameset for just a hair over $1500, not including wheels, but including an upgraged Oval Concepts Jetstream TT fork an Adamo race saddle.

Even though I didn't do most of the wrenching myself, it was very rewarding to be able to pick and choose every component myself, and I get lots of comments on the finished product.

I was just looking at the same sort of thing.  Except I was thinking sram.  Depending on the deal of the day, you can do a red/force/rival mix for ~800.

However, if you want to do cheap, I put together a hypothetical build kit with nashbar stuff for only 485 (shifters, headset, bars, cables, frnt derailleur, headset tool, housing, bar tape, spacers, couple other odds and ends...other stuff I can't remember)- plus a 20% off coupon brought it way down.  PS- I don't know if I read it wrong, but the nashbar microshifters weight less then ultegra.
