Record of the year is the award for a specific track or single of an album. Album of the year is the award for the best whole album.

Oooo, I heard this the other day on World Cafe. Album of the year is for entire albums. Record of the year is a producer's award for a specific song. Song of the year is a songwriter's award.

That terminology goes back to the days when they would release a single sing (or record) on a tiny, round sheet of vinyl. You know, the kind you had to put those round things in the middle, to play on the big turntables?? The single was called a record - as in the "Record Charts."
