Ok so am doing my first sprint in Aug and have only been covering my distance on the bike 14 miles, my son and a neighbor thought it would be good for me to start getting some longer rides in, so we head out yesterday morning they did not tell me the ditance we were doing but from looking at my logs they knew what i was able to do......OH MY GOD, hills hills and more bloody hills, the thing is i am still scared to go down big hills without using my brakes boy did this hinder me as on the up climb i just could not finish the first it was so hard, but was determined i would do this so off we go  anyway to cut this story short i managed my longest and hardest bike ride yet 30 miles with some big hills and the last hill i just went for it did not pull on the brakes and made the hill with some effort but not feeling as bad...they were good would pas me and say do not let us get away from you so i worked hard the whole time, so glad i have them doing this with me and we plan on doing this once a week.

This is exactly what you need. If you always stay in your comfort zone you will always be uncomfortable when you are out of it. Train with these guys often and you'll no doubt see much improvement!
Way to slug it out!!!

w00t!

I remember my first "group" ride, I rode TO the group ride, then we rode like 33 miles (at a ridiculous pace that I never could have held on my own), then I rode home. I was completely beat at the end, but having those people to ride with was invaluable. Glad you have some friends who will take you out, beat you up, and hang you out to dry when it's all done!

Yahoo for you.  I remember my first group ride.  A nice little 30 miler at a moderate pace, with a no drop policy.  I was always at the back of the pack then, but after four months now find myself at the front all the time.  I always liked biking alone, but now find the group rides invigorating and they help me to compare my speed and style with others to improve.

Sunday is our monthly group birthday ride, a 50 miler out into the Red Rock mountain range of the Las Vegas desert.  Although I have gone 50 miles before, it was alone and at whatever pace I felt like.  I hope I can keep up.  My biggest concern is the 6 am start, cause I just am not a morning person, but it will be over 110 F by noon.
