Subject: Visiting Utah, looking for rides in Spanish Fork!
Hey all!

I'll be in Spanish Fork in a week visiting my in-laws and I'm planning on taking my bike so that I can continue training (I've got a tri the day after we return from our 2 week vacation so I don't want to take the entire 2 weeks off).

So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good riding route around Spanish Fork. My in-laws live just barely south of US-6, right up near the entrance to the canyon. This would be right up close to the windmills they've installed at the mouth of the canyon, or in the neighborhood of East Canyon Road and 2600 E. I'm only training for sprints so I'm looking for rides in the 15-20 mile range, preferrably on relatively safe, low-traffic routes or routes with nice bike lanes.

There seem to be lots of country roads north of 6, but I'm not familiar with the area and don't know if they have nice shoulders or much traffic. Also, East Canyone and Riverbottom Road seem to make a nice loop, but again, don't know if they're safe to ride on...

Any suggestions would be most welcome!!!
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I'm probably not much help because I'm not from Utah County, but I did ride through the county a few weeks ago on State Street north of Spanish Fork. It's pretty nice through Springville. Then maybe you could do Hobble Creek Canyon? Or you could go on the south side of Utah Lake and head out on the road that's out on the western shore of the lake.

I know that some of the people from my triathlon club - desert-sharks.com, which has an active message board - would chime in if you went there and asked as well. (Not trying to veer you away from BT.com, just trying to help you out because that forum over there is way more active than this Utah board here...)

It's been a couple of years since I've lived in Utah county, but most of the roads except for I15 are great for riding in the area. I would avoid the canyon a bit though. There have been some really nasty car accidents in there.

But taking mainstreet down towards Benjamin and Payson is a great ride. If you take a left at the Payson light you can head out towards Santaquin. That has always been a good ride.

Taking the old farm roads out past the lake are nice. I think the ULCER takes that route every year. You could look up the course online and have fun with it.

Heading north through Springville to Provo would be a good easy day ride with all the lights, but still a fun time.

Honestly, if you avoid the canyon and I15, everything else should be tons of fun.

I am sorry mrwrite, I did not mean to keep anything to myself. I was just saying that my brother and I ride out in the fields west of Spanish Fork a lot. I suggested the ride heading west on fourth north in Spanish fork, and when you get to stop sign several miles out you can either go straight to west mountain, go right heading back to Springville or go left towards Payson. We usually go right towards Springville and just make it a 20 mile loop, but becuase we are getting ready for the Utah Half we have been riding to the race turnaround point a lot. All options are great and fairly flat, making a higher average speed easier. So, like I said, not trying to keep anything to myself.

I was partially kidding, Paul, but I did also want the inside scoop! I rode from Herriman to Payson a few weeks ago. I took State Street through Utah County and then ended up meandering through Spanish Fork before heading through Salem, Woodland Hills and into Payson on that main road.

My sis-in-law lives in Springville, so I'm gonna take my bike with me one of these times and ride around there. It was really nice. By the time I got to Springville from Herriman last time I was hoping to get hit by a semi-trailer or something. It was pouring rain and I was in tons of pain. Ah, good memories!

Hope all this helps, Mike. Have a good trip to Utah!
