I have doing most of my swimming in an outdoor pool and my swim routine includes some backstroke. Does anyone have a tip for backstroking in a straight line when you don't have the marks on the ceiling to follow?

try to stay close to the lane line.  I am always within a few inches of it.  My hand goes underneath the other lane when it's underwater b/c i'm that close to the lane line.  Is just takes time/practice.

personally hate the backstroke, can't figure out where I am in the water, but if you are always near the lane line you are good.

Sounds like you need to work on some more drills to keep your arms straight. Concentrate on rubbing your arm past your ear during your stroke, and remember to rotate your hips.
