Subject: Running Woes
Im having a hard time with breaking through with my running.  I need to increase the volume, but Im nursing a bad shin splilnt, so Im being very cautious about increasing the volume very fast...

Anyway, Im reducing the split times I give myself ie ( x minutes to the store, then x minutes or less to the corner, etc... )

Theproblem I have, is that there is no flat areas to run near me.  Im in the seacoast of NH, and Im not interested in driving to a track to run in circles.  Each of my routes starts out up hill, and then either has a long gradual down hill to start, or a long hill to finish... so nomatter what, 1/2 the time Im running down hill and the other half up the hill.  I can't seem to break a 10 min mile no matter how hard I go down the hills...

SHould I be happy to run uphill and just hope for flat race courses, or put in some time on the track?

i have the same issue with lack of flat areas.  My thoughts are that since the tris around here have hills, it's best for me to do training runs on hills.  And if by some chance I do a tri with a flat run all the better for me.

You could run on a treadmill to run some flats.

I couldn't run hills all the time, it would kill me.

I would probably find a track or something.

I hear you on the track runs.  I'd die of boredom if I did those too often.  I'd probably start driving to better running locations if possible if I were you.  I can't imagine constant hills are good for your shin splint, at least right now while it's healing.

If you run mostly hills (like i do),  you'll get acclimated, and when you get to the flat courses, you'll be happy you trained as you did. Just be patient: your times will drop. It took me about 2 years to get my race pace down from 8 min/mile down to high 6's, and then i stopped running for 3 years...It takes time. Just be consistent and you'll start to notice changes.

Maybe I can take a combination of steroids from Barry Bonds, and some Flubber from the absent minded professor.... that will have to help with the hills....

If you dont know or remember flubber, or the absent reminded professor, forgive me.  It was disney form a long time ago....
