Subject: Anyone had shoulder blade pain from cycling?
I have had this massive pain under my right shoulder blade for a week now.  I have been riding quite a bit and after my practice tri on July 31st I was pretty tight between my shoulder blades when I got off the bike.  I biked again that Sunday and woke up Monday morning with pain in my shoulder blade..the type that hurts when you turn your head one way etc.  Well I have biked twice since and am still this morning feeling that pain!  It is excruitiating.. where I can barely get comfortable lying down.  Think this is a bike fit problem?

Yes, probably. There are a number of factors that could affect your shoulders but you shouldn't have excruciating pain when you get done riding.

Are you in the aero position a lot more than you have been? If so, you may need to move the aerobars apart a bit. If they bars are very close you may been putting a lot of strain on your trapezius muscles.

Is this a tri bike or a road bike?  If its a tri bike, I had a similar pain when my aero bars were too close together, resulting in (what I think was) a pinched nerve.  It went away after I opened the bars.

Another bike fit idea is an overly long cockpit where you are stretched out too far.  You might need to shorten your reach to the aeorbars with your upper arms supporting more of your weight, which helps to reduce the amount of muscular support needed from your upper back.

Its hard to tell without seeing you on your bike.  I would definitely go back for a fit.

Already been said but...yes. Fit problem is likely. When I got fitted on my new tri bike recently they, switched to a shorted stem to 'tighten up my position' but told me to try it out for a while and come back as soon as I felt 'pain in my neck, or shoulders'. I said 'what kind of pain?' they indicated exactly the kind of stuff you are describing.
Hope that helps.

How are you sleeping?

I've had similar pain while on my bike, but it's the result of sleeping on my side. I've been trying to turn onto my back when I sleep because I'm just not comfortable on my side and I wakeup with that pain. It's hard to stay on your back when you just want to curl into the fetal position, though.

Thanks for the replies.  Guess I should have added that I am on a road bike, not a tri bike.  And I tend to ride mostly on the hoods.  I have gotten this type of pain from sleeping before, and I do sleep on my side and that is the side that I sleep on... hmmm.. Never lasted this long before though..usually a few days and its gone.. Maybe the cycling is just aggravating it.
