Subject: Riding in the Burnaby, Coquitlam, New West area

Hey everyone,

I'm visiting the area for the summer doing some work at SFU. I'm living in the Coquitlam area and am trying to figure out where I can go out and ride? I'm from Edmonton and I usually ride on secondary highways with paved shoulders. I've kind of looked at the maps available, but there is quite a bit of construction going on in the area. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I live on the North Shore.. but like to ride out in the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Fort Langley, Langley, south Surrey & White Rock areas.. a bit less traffic.. and varied terrain..

The Township of Langley produces bike route maps.. I know they have paper copies at the Walnut Grove Recreation Centre (88th & Walnut Grove.. up from the 200th Street exit off Hwy 1)...

I live is NE Coquitlam and my normal rides take me east along the Lougheed Hwy towards Pitt Meadows / Maple Ridge. Once over the Pitt River bridge hang a right along Kennedy Road and enjoy paved backroad riding for miles.

I live right near SFU in Coquitlam...

SFU laps are fun - up/down over SFU, then around the north side on Barnet Hwy.  IT's about 45 min to an hour per lap with lots of climbing.

I usually head out to the valley for longer efforts - a typical ride would be like this http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=454310. Heading straight out Dewdney for as long as you want to go is pretty fun too - typically we get onto Dewdney at around 232 as it's pretty busy before then.

Also, south of the river (see above map but go over the Golden Ears bridge) try out 102/208/Allard Crescent/River Road.  Can ride forever out there.

Not sure of any routes around those areas, but like others have said, there's lots of good routes in the South Surrey, Maple Ridge, Langley area. If you can get out to 0 ave from 176th, the US/Canada border, you can ride out for around 28kms one way.

try the  link in user info( above), Routes. 

Search ,type in the keywords box,  Tri Cities, Maple ridge, Coquitlam, Burnaby. You are sure to find some good routes in there. Or go to Mapmyride and do the same. Lots of runs ,rides there.

Thanks everyone for your help! I really appreciate it. It's a bit hard to decipher some of the cycling maps for what would be a good training route vs. commuting route. I was away for the weekend but will be testing out some riding this week in the Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge/Langley/etc area. Good to know where other people train out here!
