Buttercup 14334 | Subject: New England bound Hi, Folks. We are looking to move to the New England area, heavily favoring New Hampshire at the moment. We have sailboat considerations, so we are targeting areas around Lake Winnepesaukee or coastal (Portsmouth). Our other priorities are quality of life, accessibility to good restaurants, entertainment. We ski but proximity to a resort isn't important. I would like to be situated convenient to an indoor lap pool. As a point of comparison, I really liked Newburyport MA. The MA taxes are probably the only thing holding us back. My husband really likes Rhode Island but, again, taxes. Suggestions, comments, feedback? For those who live in/around, what is your favorite town or city? Where would you live if you could move anywhere in New England and why? Thanks in advance. |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: New England bound Hello, Thomas. Lake Sunapee is a smaller lake, not too far from Winnepesaukee. Sunapee is too small for the sailing we're looking for, though the area is lovely. Hope the Geezerettes and miniGeezerettes are all well. |

Elite 4344 | Subject: RE: New England bound Hey Renee,
Thank you very much. JWKMH and the Geezerettes and mini-Geezerettes are all doing well. By the mention of a husband, I surmise that you are married. I did not know that. Best wishes to you and him. Good luck on the move. It will be a real change over Florida.

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: New England bound I currently live in NH and have lived in MA or NH my whole life (w/exception of Colorado for a year); went to school in Boston, work north of the city now. If you're looking coastal and in NH then you're kind of limited because there isn't much actual coast in NH, but Portsmouth is a really good choice. It's a great city for walking around in the summer with tons of really good bars and restaurants and lots of live events throughout the summer. Matters who you talk to but it's not cheap to live there. Taxes will be high; in NH no income tax but high property taxes. If you want to be close to Portsmouth but not IN the city then Rye is probably the other option I'd suggest in that area. Generally the closer you get to the coast there's only one way in and one way out of the cities as they've done a lot to preserve the lands around and not build roads everywhere so you just have to be prepared in the summer with beach traffic. Lake wise if you want to sail you definitely have to go north. Winni is a great area, very congested during the summer with a much more laid back feel in the winter without as many people around. It'd be expensive to live right there, I actually don't know anyone that lives up there as most people just go up on vacation or own a 2nd home there. If the sailing could take a back seat and you just want general nice places to live in the area. I live in Hampstead NH and love it. Londonderry and Windham NH are really nice and close to the highway (I93). In MA you already mentioned Newburyport, going west you have Boxford, Groveland then a bit more west is Andover. I93 runs north/south and if you're north of the city and east of 93 you're at MOST 30-45 minutes from the ocean, further east less time to salt water obviously. Any specific questions on towns or areas let me know. |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: New England bound Thanks for the reply. Sorry I am just now checking back. Convenience to coast is important as we own a 40 foot sailboat. It's too big for the lake but we're open to downsizing to something 28-30 feet. So, water nearby is key. We don't want to be in an area that has a significant seasonal population; we want a more vibrant community. We look for 2 markers as an indication of the demographics and culture - locally owned bagel shop and running store. If the town doesn't have those, it's not for us. My husband has decided that he wants to look at CT as he has a handful of friends there, also sailors. Taxes no longer seem to be a showstopper so that opens up a lot of coastline for us, between CT and MA. Maybe RI if I can find some elevation in that state. I'm heading up there tomorrow for another look around. |
