Taking a break from the presidential race for a moment, the world of politics has lost an important voice today. After 34 years of being the host of the Mclaughlin Group, John has passed away this morning. I watched his show every week and appreciated his dedication to producing a show with no BS. He never gave an introduction, he never wasted time with small talk, he went straight to the issues and then kept the ball rolling until there was only just enough time to interrupt and say "Out of time! Bye bye!" Kudos to him and the rest of the panel for keeping their audience informed on major issues of the day. One of my favorite John quotes which seems fitting now: "Person of the year: Pope Francis, especially now that he's told that animals can go to heaven. And Oliver is up there waiting for me." Godspeed Mr. Mclaughlin.
Oh man, that is sad.
I've been watching the MG since I was a pre-teen in the 80s.
My wife and I incorporated the show into our homeschool class as a part of social studies to kickstart discussions on politics with our kids.
This is very, very sad.
It was not unexpected though as they had gone a couple weeks without airing a show, and then, on this week's and his final show, he could not be present for the show, but the trooper he is, he taped his questions for the panel, and his voice was quite affected. He had not missed a show in 34 years from what I'm told. 89 years...quite a full life. He will be sorely missed.
