:-)

I can't explain the excitement I am feeling right now. What an awesome site & I can't wait for my first Tri! (Actually, 2nd...did one on a whim about 6 years ago). I was half-heartedly training for my second marathon when I decided it is not the route I want to take. I have always loved the feeling and versatility of the triathlons, though I have never seriously "attacked" one. Please, please, please tell me all you can about it...advice, equiptment, preparation, training schedules...I can't wait to learn!! I am in North Carolina, so there are plenty of tris for me to work towards. My goal is to hit a couple of sprints & work myself to a H-IM. After you are through chuckling at me please enlighten this rookie. I welcome ALL advice!

No laughing here! I think that if you set your goals and you believe in yourself, there is nothing funny about it. Glad to have you here.

Still Tri'n,

we have been waiting for your return nicole!   its about time!  glad u found our neck of the woods.  'tell me all u can about it'  that may not be wise as most of us will vomit at the mouth with soo much info and rhetoric....don't want to scare u.

im being stupid, anyways, i guess the logical first question is when is your first sprint scheduled and your current training?

lots of schedules on the main site to hopefully suit your needs....

Ron, Michael & Rick, thanks for your quick reply! I am pretty fired up about starting my training and have been scouring the internet for various programs. I am signed up for the Azeala Festival Tri in April which consists of a 300 yard swim (pool) 20K Bike & 5K Run. I am comfortably running with my long runs consisting of 13-15 milers. I am looking forward to decreasing the distance, increasing my speed & adding the swimming and biking elements into it. Here is a question, though....what type of weight training do you recomend? I really enjoy hitting the weights, but have read I should go down to circuit training with light weights and high reps. Any opinions in this matter?

Also need to find myself a bike! (Yikes!) Any advice here?

As far as training programs...I am looking at the 16 week Olympic swim focused program I found on this site. Should I start with a sprint program, or can I hit the Olympic right off the bat??? See??? Full of questions!! I hope you all know you have opened a can of words replying to me!! Hopefully I will be able to entertain ya a little along the way! :-)

Congrats on trying a tri. With your run background I think following the Olympic program sounds good for you. You should have no problem completing a sprint distance. As for the bike, I'd visit a good bike shop and get fitted, getting the correct size is very important, and get an idea of price range. It can be pretty expensive. Then test and shop and find one you like. Good luck and have fun!

yeah!  the oly sounds doable to start now...assuming u can also do the swim and bike comfortably.

weights?  yeah, high reps, low weight for joint, tendon strength...hit about 2 exercises per muscle group...maybe 2-3 times/week....sorry...i lift hard/heavy so i am going against the rule for endurance.

maybe break your weights up by:

  • day 1: chest/tri's/abs
  • day 2: legs/back/abs
  • day 3: shoulders/bi's/abs

i am sure others will fill u in on exercieses that work...

look forward to your azeala race report!
