Comments: At the cannon’s shot, the race officially began. The beginning of the race was a bit of a jumbled mess. But, I found a guy who was going my speed, and I used him as my blocker for the first mile. It cleared out a bit by mile 2. I did a solid 10 minute mile pace for the first three miles. My training plan told me to pick up the pace for the second 5K. So, at mile 3 I pushed myself a bit more. I started to pass people, and tried to pick up the pace a bit at every mile marker. I have to admit that it was really cool to pass people. It is not something that I usually experience while running :). My goal pace was 9:50, so I’m really happy with this time. What would you do differently?: Not much. Maybe push it a bit more in the beginning. Post race
Warm down: I walked around and watched people finish. Drank some water. Ate a banana, some sweet bread, and a ice cream bar. Event comments: This was a great course. The first mile had a view of the Arizona Memorial. The second had a view of the Mighty Mo. Very scenic. This was my first race where I didn’t have any family or friends with me, but I didn’t really mind the solitude. It was fun. Last updated: 2007-04-04 12:00 AM

I got up. Got dressed. Ate a bagel and drank a cup of coffee. It was raining. I drove to the race start, and it wasn’t raining on that side of the island. Yea!
I got there with plenty time to spare. So, I listened to my ipod and people watched. As is my experience, there was a huge variety of people represented at the race—it’s just not possible to be bored with that many different people around.
Random thought of the race: is there a correlation between shorts length and speed? Lot’s of speedy looking people were wearing short shorts. I was wearing capris. Maybe some of those short shorts would be a good investment. Or not.
It took awhile to herd all of the racers to the starting line. For pre-race festivities they let out a bunch of birds that were dyed in various colors. I’m not really sure if there was any significance to that, but it was pretty to see a rainbow if birds flying over Pearl Harbor.
