Welcome to Beth and Yanti's 2010 Manatees! You would be a wonderful addition to our lively, supportive, and most useful crew. We’ve co-mentored many seasons of newbies and veterans alike—we’re all mentorees, but Manatees just sounds more fun!

Just to establish our street (and pool?) cred, we’ve done a bunch of triathlons and distance running events, and have lost a ton of weight during our journeys. Beth is a BT moderator and Yanti is a Beginner Triathlete of the Month.

Read on for more details if you like!

Beth

I'm Beth, a.k.a lastcall2003, a.k.a Tinkerbeth

Lastcall2003 represents a turning point in my life—2003 was the year I woke up and realized that I needed to do something about being 30 lbs overweight with high blood pressure, having become completely inactive, and well, not liking who I was very much. It is a reminder to never let myself go back to being that person!

I have 3 kids (2 in college and 1 in high school) and live in Pennsylvania.

I did my first triathlon in my mid-40s and have now completed 2 Olys, 4 Sprints, and 2 half-marathons!  My first love is swimming, followed closely by biking, and to my surprise I’m really coming to love running! In fact, I am focusing on that right now, and am ultimately working toward a full marathon. I generally use the BT training plans during the race season.

Yanti

I grew up in Indonesia, where I swam with the national team and my high school team. In the States, I coached and competed in martial arts, but became sedentary after an injury. Fast forward … a student suckered me into doing a charity marathon—before long I learned how to ride a bike and picked swimming back up! After 15 years in the States, mostly Southern California, I’ve moved to Bali, Indonesia, where it’s great to have the ocean, a boardwalk for running, and easy bike routes at my doorstep.

I’ve been lucky enough to do marathons and triathlons around the world. I’ve lost nearly 100 lbs. since becoming active again (40 lbs. during my first tri season). I am still an Athena (generally, a female athlete over 150 lbs.)

This year I feel like a newbie again as I am taking on a new distance—Ironman Western Australia in Dec. 2010. While I’ll do a half-Iron in May and some other races during the year, my entire training is focused on the IM goal.

I do BT or other well-researched plans and my own adjustments to periodize my training year (fancy word for training different ways during different times of year for maximum benefit). Most of my workouts have a purpose and fall into well-planned weeks: it helps maximize training time and prevent burnout and injury.

Ooh, can I be a manatee?! Laughing

I'm Rebecca, 26, originally from Nashville, TN but longtime resident of Philadelphia, PA. I'm a full-time grad student studying to be a speech therapist, with a part-time job in research. Brian, my wonderful partner of 3 years, will be putting up with me while I get started on this triathlon thing.

Athletic background... uh, remember the slow klutz in gym class who couldn't do anything right? Yeah, that was me. I did no exercise of any kind until I was 20, and since then have done various things (dancing, running, pilates, kickboxing) on and off.
My old roomie from college did her first triathlon this year, which inspired the heck out of me, and I discovered BT while I was stuck at home with (oink) swine flu over the summer. I was all set to get started this fall (when starting school meant free access to gym and pool) until my time got killed by adjusting to school and my motivation got killed by financial woes (stupid economy).

Now I've adjusted to grad school, the economy's clearly not getting any less stupid, and I even learned to ride a bike for the first time so that I could do tris. So no more excuses!

Current regular exercise... walking 2-5 miles a day as part of my commute, but that's it. I am really starting from scratch!

Welcome, Rebecca! Not only are you brilliant, but clearly computer-savvy because you found us

SUPER CONGRATS on learning to ride a bike! I had to do that, too, to tri ... rock on! That kind of courage and perseverance brings you FAR in triathlon. I am especially impressed that you came from being gym-klutz to trying all sorts of things, and now tri.

Hi girls, can I join you too?

My name is Mia (I'm 32) and I moved to the US from Sweden almost 4 years ago ( in feb next year).

I want to do my first sprint tri next year and hopefully also a half marathon.

I always hated exercise and got a D in school in gymclass, I was happy at least it wasn't an F. Wink

I gained a lot of weight when I went to college ( about 50 lb in 2 years) and I have lost about 35 lb of that so I still have some to lose.

This year I decided to start running. I begun in March and did a C25K and in June I ran my first race, a 5K in 30 min. Then I wanted to run a 10K, so I trained for that and did that in August in 65 min.
Then I got a stress fracture. FrownCry

So no more running for 8 weeks when that was healing.
So I started a Body for life program with gym training for 12 weeks and I just finished that.
Now I want to start my running again and also some tri-training.
I have done a sprint in the gym, but doing rowing machine instead of swimming so I think I have what it takes. Laughing

/Mia, a.k.a running girl, a.k.a lady lucky

May I join you?  I am a 37 year old wife, mother, and totally new at all of this. Not only have I pretty much always been overweight, but I've always considered myself completely unathletic.  Let's put it this way -- the last time I tried to be athletic I got laughed off of the Jr. High track team.  Not sure exactly what it was that clicked that made me want to do this -- a combo of some friends from college completing a sprint triathlon together, watching my husband go from couch to a half marathon (and now training for a marathon), and just being fed up with being overweight (I'd hit a high of 235 lbs, which I carry pretty well on my 5'10" frame, but still!).  I started couch to 5K in earnest in September, and have completed two 5K races (very slowly).  I've purchased a bike, started taking spin once a week in addition to running 2-4 miles 3x a week, and took some swim lessons (really need some more of those).  And I've lost 11 lbs.  I am aiming for the Disney Danskin Sprint on Mother's Day (May 9, 2010) and I am looking forward to the comraderie of a mentor group, and some more guidance on getting my swim up to snuff so I can complete the race.
