Be careful out there, folks.

Weatherford cyclist killed on I-20 access road

By ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

A Weatherford man who was riding his bicycle along the Interstate 20 access road near Willow Park was killed Thursday night when he was struck by a pickup truck.

Thomas Hollrith Jr. 46, of Weatherford, was westbound on his bicycle along the north service road between Ranch House and Mikus roads when he was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Jason Clark Perkins, also of Weatherford, said trooper Simon De La Cruz with the Department of Public Safety office in Weatherford. The truck is owned by EOG Resources, of Houston, he said.

The accident happened shortly before sunset, the sun was in the driver’s eyes, and he did not see Hollrith, De La Cruz said.

Hollrith, who was wearing a helmet, was riding in the middle of the road and not along the shoulder, the trooper said.

Perkins was heading home from a restaurant when the accident occurred, De La Cruz said.

Man.. this is sad and scary. I did the peach pedal a couple of weeks ago and an officer sent me onto the shoulder of 20... not even on the access road.

I don't like how the office said (or was quoted as saying), "Hollrith, who was wearing a helmet, was riding in the middle of the road and not along the shoulder, the trooper said." To me, it makes it sound like it was the riders fault.....He was on the access road.. not I20... It doesn't make a difference whether he was on the shoulder or in the road. If the sun was in the driver's eyes and he hit someone in the middle of the road, he was driving too fast for the conditions or was not paying attention. I wonder if he received a ticket or charged with anything?

I feel bad for all involved. sad...

Be safe everyone...

Kenny

I know the S-T reporter. I'll follow up with her regarding citations for the driver.  We need a "move over" law.

Motorcycle or bicycle, it seems the majority of the time the finger gets pointed towards them.

You have to ride like your invisiable out there.

No.  You have to make yourself visible!  Lights, flashers, reflectors, balloons - whatever it takes to catch that motorist's attention and make him/her recognize that someone else, someone much smaller than them in their truck/suv/car is out there, too.  Be seen, people.

I agree about making yourself seen... but in this case, it stated that driver could not see because the sun was in his eyes. I am not sure what could have been done in this instance.... sad..

Wow, another one !?!?!?!  My heart goes out to the family.......  No matter how many times this happens I don't think it could be any less tragic.

There definitely seems to be a lack of respect for cyclists on the road.  It's a little unsettling to hear it from a trooper though.  It seems like an easy cop out to say that the sun was in his eyes and that the cyclist was in the middle of the road.  It does seem to put blame on Hollrith the way it is worded.

Anyone know what's going on with that petition that went around?
