I've started with a new masters group that swims outside throughout the summer.  At 5:30am it's rather dark, and my metalized goggles don't make it any better.  So I'm going to get a new set.

Right now I use TYR racetechs and love them.  They fit perfectly and have held up really well.  However, I'm tempted to cross to the dark side and get a pair of sweedes.  I was eyeing the TYR Socket Rocket 2.0.  Anyone have experience with these?

I'm also debating on color.  Clear would be the obvious choice, but would an amber lens be better (like they are for cycling in the dark) ?

Also, since we are talking swim stuff...  Does anyone make a suit that is shorter then jammers, but longer the a brief...actually about the length of tri shorts?

Don't know about the goggles, but I have advice for the swim suit.

I bought a pair of jammers, but quickly found them annoying.  I now have a pair of "Square" shorts.  The legs are about 2 inches long.  They feel much better than the jammers and dont look as scary as a speedo.  I bought a Speedo Brand with the "Endurance" fabric.  I bought it online.  I will only wear black for my tight shorts, colors are much too revealing.

I was actually just going to ask that myself (the swede question, not the speedo one).  All I own are a pair of legit, put-them-together-myself red swedes and a pair of tinted socket rockets.  I've sworn by swedes for the past 8 years, but now that I'm crossing over into the world of triathlon from the world of competitive swimming, I'm starting to have my doubts - if I'm going to get nailed in the face by a stray foot, wouldn't it be better with some padding?

I'll be using my socket rockets at my first tri this weekend.  If they're permanently embedded in my face afterwards, I guess we'll have our answer

I'm not a fan of Swedes for tris.  (But they look sweet!).  I used to wear them all the time but it's not worth it for the reason mentioned...the getting kicked in the eye factor.  My current goggles are Speedo Vanquisher and I'm happy with them.  Though allegedly anti-fog, they fog, so plan for a remedy.  Plenty in the forums on that issue.

If you're swimming outdoor in the dark, I'd go clear...but I don't swim much/ever in the dark, so that's just a guess as to that over amber.

I can't comment on the color, but I have three pairs of Socket Rockets (all tinted) and I really like them. The rubber coating on the outer edge makes them just that much more comfortable than swedes, they don't leak, they're low profile, and you can fit them to your face easily. I only use them for training, and for that they never wear out which is great. But I wear Aquasphere Kaimen's for races because they're much softer and work better for me in the uncontrolled washing machine that is a mass start. While my socket rockets never leak in the pool, one bump and I fear that they'd be all full of water plus leave a nice mark.

i'm not planning on racing in these goggles, just use them for morning workouts.  I'll use the race-techs for racing.

I think I'll order a set of socket rockets

I normally wear swedes, but have tried a pair of the socket rockets and liked them. The thin layer of rubber is nice, and they are probably an easier transition from more "normal" goggles than going straight to swedes. I like red for my normal pool swimming, but amber is a good color for the early morning when you want to let in more light.

As to your question on suits, if you go to www.swimoutlet.com, they have a section called "square leg suits" that generally is between the briefs and jammers. A number of them look like male stripper gear to me, so be careful, but I think they're generally close to what you're describing.

Which would be why they are every female swimmer's favorite sight
