After a couple years of doing gels my body fianlly has revolted and I can no longer get the things sucked down without my stomach says saying: "shoes, have some gels ... I am sending them your way". My system has been as been picky, so finding something that works has been a struggle. My latest experiment has worked out wonderfully ... do a shot block every 15 minutes followed with some old fashioned green gatorade. I don't really care for the taste of the gatorade, but it is available at almost every race, so my system is not surprised. I just did a 20 mile run this way and would have to say it was one of my best runs in a long time. The energy was very level (in fact my pace was within 6 seconds at EVERY milepost) and my GI system felt great.

Now the problem ... since my tri season is over I have switch my focus on tring to qualify for the Boston Marathon (3:15:59 for my age). For my training runs I just load up the pouch of my fuel belt with Bloks and pick them out. However, come race day I don't want to run with the big ole' fuel belt on. I have been trying to figure out a way to get the bloks onto my race belt (with the little elastic loops for gels). I could always were a fanny pack and just load it up with the 14+ bloks I want for the race, but I thought I would see if anyone has come up with a better option.

I have read the other posts and ... "NO" to all of the forthcoming suggestions about sticking them to my face and running the race as some sort of mutant leper.

Do you leave them in the package, or do you just dump them out. The later sounds like a great option, however i wonder if they would become a sticky mess when mixed with sweat and heat? I have this vision of reaching in my pocket and getting "slimed" like in the original Ghost Busters.

Bite/tear off one of the bottom corners, then you can squeeze them out one at a time as needed.

I just picked up a SPIBelt (http://www.overtonfitness.com/spibelt.php) to carry my keys, iPod and cell phone when I run.  My runs are short enough that I don't need any nutrition or water (yet).  But the belt sort of collapses down so it is not as bulky as a fuel belt (which I've used but didn't really care for) or a fanny pack. I think you could keep the blocks in there, and if you are coordinated enough to operate the zipper while running, even keep your pace going (or use it as an excuse to slow down for a minute).

I don't use the shot blocks, but I do use the sport beans. What I do is I leave them in the original package, but cut off all the excess on the bottom so it's more compact, then snip the top. I have two small pouches in my shorts, so I fold the top of the package over and stuff the package in the pouches. When I need the beans, I just pull the package out and eat what I need. You DO NOT want to just put the blocks in your pouch/shirt by themselves b/c they will get pretty disgusting from your sweat. Yuck! I also think the suggestion of wearing a tri shirt and sticking them in the back pocket is great! I might do that during my half marathon next month...we'll see.

Shot bloks + water (rain, dribble, sweat) = a terrible sticky gooo that you cannot get off your hands until a thorough hand washing with soap and water.
