Subject: Low back pain... help

I've been experiencing lower back pain during running.  It starts hurting about half way through my run right above my buttocks.  I was wondering what could be causing this, and if I should still be biking and swimming?  Thx for the help guys

I'm not sure all of the causes, but I know I get some back pain on occasion because my hamstrings are extremely tight - which makes everything else pull. I do a "Yoga for Cyclists" program to try to keep my muscles flexible. If this is not the case for you, I would recommend checking your daily activities to see if you do something repetative that might be affecting your back. You may just need a massage or a chiropractor.

Core support could be part of the problem - check your posture. If you're allowing your back to arch/curve at all while you're running, that can cause pain. Try to focus on engaging your core while you run, and don't let your butt stick out - think of a bad dog tucking in his tail.

I recently started PT for lower back pain.  In addition to lots of quad and hammy stretching, they've also given my some back strenghtening exercises.  After about ten days of this, my lower back pain is gone.  Although I've been doing both (stretching and strenghtening), my impression is that the strengthening exercises have been most useful.  I can feel them engaging the muscles right in the area of the back that was getting sore.

I have a question for myself and would appreciate any input I have a nagging pain in my lower back left side more like upper Buttock and I only feel it when I stand straight and lift my left knee up to horizontal or if i lift my left leg out horizontal.I can bend over and touch my toes and nothing.I notice it mostly when I get in my low car.It feels worse 1st thing in the AM.I think it started when I was on my motorcycle all day a couple of weeks ago and now running aggravates it.It feels good today I am icing it off and on for 10 mins and getting a massage on Thursday. Now for the ? LOL

I have my 1st Tri this Sat a sprint in wakefield 1/4 mile swim,13 mile bike, and a 5k run. I really want to do this it is 5 mins from my house. I swam today and was going to do some transistion practice tommorow and ?? something on Thursday and take Friday off. Ohh and I have a Physical conveniently enough on Thu as well that I booked 7 months ago.

I will welcome any advice Stretching,Resting,Help exercises etc... I am nervous enough for this tri and want to be as good as I can be. Thanks in advance..................................Stephen

I do not know what i did to my back or it may just be my DAD's fault. Anyway, i am training for my first tri on Aug 30th and i have been laid up for almost a week, cannot even go to work. Lower back went out while at work, NYC FF, and i am going to doctor tommorow but it is killing me not to be able to work out and train, pretty funny since i was always one to hate the gym and training until i started training for a tri, now i cannot get enough of training Laughing Hopefully i can get back at it soon enough, now , do i start my training where i left off or do i start at week 7 or 8 instead of week 6 which is where i was when i got hurt ?? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks for getting me addicted !!!

About 20 years ago I went thru lower back surger (L5 S1).  I think there should be an association for all of us with that surgery it is so prevelant.

Ater I could move again, it was hit the gym and abs abs abs.  Of course now they call it core.  Your core (abs) support your back and help protect it from injury.  Stretching and core exercises will help in a quick recovery and prevent future injury.
