Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is Muscle Milk overall safe? It seems to be just a protein supplement and it tastes delicious, but I'm always a little weary of anything with tons of chemical names on the bottle. Could any nutritionists/doctors or body building enthusiasts weigh in? What are your experiences with it, if any? Right now I am using this for recovery on days when I lift. Thank you! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had muscle milk before, more when I was trying to pack on muscle than now, when I'm primarily trying to get faster. I think it's very overrated. It's packed with loads of extras (vitamins, calories, FAT), and you pay for it. For the vitamins, you're far better off eating a well balanced diet. It's also very expensive. IMO, if you're looking for extra protein in your diet and are dead set on using a supplement (which I myself do), use simple whey protein powder. It's much less expensive and has exactly what you're looking for: protein. Nothing more. If you have any issues with dairy, get whey protein isolate, which is a bit more expensive (still less than Muscle Milk) but won't affect ppl who are lactose intolerant (from what I hear). After lifting, if I were to choose from a Muscle Milk and a chocolate milk, I'd opt for the chocolate milk, which has the desired 4:1 carb-to-ratio mix you're looking for and is loads cheaper. Also, as an animal product, it's packed with essential amino acids, which are necessary for muscle development. To wrap up, it's not a bad product. It works. But you're paying for the packaging. A whey protein shake and a cup of fruit juice (for carbs), or a chocolate milk, will do just as well. FYI, I prefer Designer Whey protein powder. I put this into a sports bottle, throw in some water, shake it and it's all mixed - not lumpy like some other powders. It's also cheaper. Hope this helps. |

X2 ( I use generics of Designer Whey) My favorite recipe... 1-2 scoops whey (Vanilla) 1 banana 1 cup of whatever frozen berry was cheap at costco 1 tbls of generic metamucil water add blender. FYI, Muscle Milk is getting cheaper, but not cheap enough to disregard denefi's analysis. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good analyses, though I want to clarify on two points that I think denefi knows, but was a little vague on. 1) Muscle Milk has good fats: essential fatty acids and the likes. Never stray away from a product with fat in it unless it a) doesn't fall into your macro breakdown for the day or b) is full of "bad fats," i.e. saturated fats... 2) Muscle Milk has amino acids in it. In fact, it probably has a better amino acid profile than milk. Granted that they are not from the loins of a wild animal, they are still at least as beneficial, if not more beneficial, in protein synthesis as compared with milk's amino acid profile. Denefi gives a spot-on analysis: stick with a high quality whey. However, if you are looking for something that packs it all in one scoop versus actual milk, then you need to assess your goals; if you are approaching it from an extremist muscle-building standpoint, i.e. bodybuilding, then I'd go for the Muscle Milk (being somewhat of a bodybuilder myself); if you are just looking to prevent muscle catabolism and general health, then a glass of milk will do the trick. To sum it up, go for a nice whey. I recommend Optimum Nutrition's. If you're looking for more than just protein and can't get your calories from whole foods, go for the Muscle Milk. Hope that helps. Don't look TOO much into it though. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use Muscle Milk light because I am trying to build muscle and it is very convenient. My time is very limited and my meals are very split up so the convenience of 2 scoops and bang I got my meal is good for me right now. Also I am lactose intolerant or choco milk would be great. |

![]() | ![]() In my purely anecdotal experience with the stuff, I gained a lot of weight muscle and fat on MM. It's delicious, but I can't hang with it. Now I do 1% Chocolate Milk, freeze it overnight, let it thaw while I'm working out and drink a milk shake when I get to my desk. That's how I roll. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use MM Light in Choc. Mint. Blended w/ crushed ice and to me it's exactly like a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino. I also use Beverly International's Ultimate Muscle Protein in Vanilla. I'm pretty picky about my shakes flavor wise. And those are 2 that work, so I'm sticking with them. I am not doing the strength training I used to but will pick it back up in August and get back on daily shakes. For now though, a shake is still a better choice for me if I'm hungry and night and thinking about eating crap. |
