Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I remember a thread a while back with someone talking about how they hated cycling because they didn't feel like their skills were improving, so I wanted to share this as, hopefully, a little encouragement. I'll go ahead and admit this part now, I just started riding a bike in spring of 2008 (March). Started from scratch, as in, never learned to ride as a kid. I had to pick it up at age 28/29 at 6'2" and 260 pounds! Much more painful! Anyway, I shared the frustration that I could never take my hands off the handlebars without swerving violently all over the road! Little by little I started taking my hands off for a split second and putting them back on really fast... Then, just this past weekend, somehow I was able to take my hand off for a couple of real seconds, and realized I wouldn't necessarily tip over instantly! Then I was able to wipe my forehead, unzip my jersey, etc. Last night I was riding and I was able to take my hand off to grab my camelbak mouthpiece, to drink while I was still riding. First time. At any rate, I realize this is not a big deal to folks who have been doing this forever, but for anyone who is terrified of taking their hands off the bars... Never fear, there is hope! It just takes a little patience (and courage!). I still can't drink from a water bottle while riding, but I'm sure that's only a matter of a little more time. Thanks for reading! |

Thanks for reading! ha, i am the same way! i only started riding about a year ago, and it was in my first race at the end of june that i drank from the bottle while riding. i think its a matter of just being on the bike longer and longer and being more comfortable with it until you can do those things. it will come with time!!!! and i was SO proud of drinking on my bike - almost as much as i was proud to finish my first tri! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() while i did ride a bike growing up as a kid, i was never on a road or tri bike, and felt much the same way when i started riding. all sorts of wobbly going on. congrats! the water bottle will be there soon enough. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() when I was a kid I used to ride with no hands all the time on my MTB. for some reason though now as an adult I can't do it at all. I start to swerve to the left. It might be because of how far forward I am on a road bike but yeah... no more riding with no hands for me. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It was me! I was explaining why the bike is my nemesis. I feel like I have to spend more time on the bike than I do on any other physical endeavor only to see less result. Most people suggested that perhaps my negative attitude toward biking was the culprit. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a "no hands" breakthrough, recently too! Like the OP, for the longest time I could not take my hands of the bars (for even a second), without the bike swerving in every direction. Then, one day a few weeks ago...on a deserted road, I was determined to nail riding with no hands. It took a few tries, but I finally got the hang of it...and the next thing I knew, I had been riding for about 1/4 mile with NO HANDS! Weeeeeeee!!!! It felt SO liberating...I even managed to mimic a "finish line" celebration like the pro's do!! LOL |

Glad to hear things are improving! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm also really glad to hear other people's similar stories! Doesn't it just make you feel so good when things fall into place like that? ![]() |
