Okay...been reading the posts of what to wear...seems like mostly related to men. Women, what do you wear? Tri-shorts in pool? If so, what on top? I had planned on throwing some shorts on over my swimming suit...apparently that's a bad idea? I am on a little bit of a budget, but can get some shorts if that's the best option.

If you are on a tight budget... just throw your shorts on over the swim suit. It won't be the most comfortable... but it will get the job done. Any discomfort you have won't last that long.

If you think you might do more than 1 tri and you can use the tri shorts after this one, go get a pair. They make it so much easier.

I personally wear a tri top. Then again I have also been doing this for 5 years, so I'm cool with spending the money on a tri top and shorts- I use them in races and in training.

Good luck on your first tri!

PS- Here is a picture of me in my tri top/shorts (and yes I'm making a horrible face!):

Are you saying for a race with a pool swim? If it's a relatively short bike (say, 15 miles or so), I'd just wear my swim suit (or tri outfit if you have one).

My normal race day outfit is tri shorts and a sport bra top. However, on non-wetsuit legal races, I typically swim in a swim suit pulled over top, as I don't like the drag.

It is a race with a pool swim...but I have a goal to do open water next year (just learned to swim this year) and I assume that what I wear in the pool, I wear on the bike? So most of you swim in the tank or shirt you bike in? Sports bra not an option...2 kids numerous stretch marks...need I say more?

What you see in my picture I swim, ride and run in. As you can see the top covers everything.

If you get the right make/brand the top can cover your chest and stomach.

I did my first tri this weekend in a swim suit with shorts on top.  They were just a simple small pair of mesh shorts.  I trained in this outfit a couple of times to know that it supported me and was comfortable enough to tolerate for the race.  I wouldn't say the shorts slowed me down - they took like 3 seconds to slip on and my transition time was fine.

GL!!

Thanks everyone! I think I will shop around for a reasonable priced pair of shorts and shirt...if I can't find one, I will go with my first plan and throw shorts over my suit. Seems like anyway I look at it, I will be wet and a little uncomfortable. I also just invested a hundred bucks in new shoeS and last year the new Felt bike. Getting a little pricey!

I am new to the sport and just cannot justify spending $60+ on a tri top.  However, I cannot run in a swimsuit because it doesn't give my chest enough support.  I ended up swimming in my running bra and tri shorts (but my tri was in the ocean so this was under a wetsuit).  When I got on the bike I threw a loose fitting nike tank top on over my running bra.  I think you will find that you won't notice the wet shorts at all while riding or running.  Also, there are tons of people wearing all different types of clothes so don't worry about standing out like a geek wearing the wrong thing.
