Subject: Help about nausea and salt caps

Last Tuesday the weather was hot and humid here in NYC, finally.  The temp was in the 90s so I decided to ride my bike.  I just wanted to ride a little but ended up doing 60 miles between 3:15-3:30 (I left my watch so not sure exactly).  I also wanted to experiment with taking salt caps because I sweat profusely (Took 1 each hour).  I was fine the whole way, but at the end of the ride when I got off my bike it hit me.  I was feeling so nauseous.  I think I hydrated enough, but can salt caps cause this or I did not take enough of it.  I've ridden longerride before, but not in that type of heat.  I've never experienced this.  Should I not use the salt caps?  or did the heat do this.  Thanks for any input.

I have no idea on salt caps because I don't know exactly what they are but I do know that if you want to induce vomiting for someone who just swallowed something with poison in it, you give them a teaspoon of table salt.

Also, the next time you are out with your friends, dump a teaspoon of salt into their glass of Coke (or any other carbonated drink).  That's similar to what happens when it hits the acids in your stomach according to my old Chemistry teacher.

go to Hammernutrition.com and download their guide for endurance athletes.  There is a whole section on electrolyte replenishment.

They're basically sodium capsules.  It suppose to replenish the salt that you loose when sweating.   It suppose to prevent nausea.

What is the difference between this stuff and Cytomax?  I sweat a lot too and I've been using Cytomax.  Since I started, I find that I still sweat a lot but I can do my 6 mile runs without drinking and I don't cramp.  I drink it prior to my workout and immediately following.

The difference? Cytomax is disgusting and Hammer's stuff isn't.

In all seriousness, though, if you're trying the Endurolytes, you might want to try the capsules instead of the straight powder. You can open up the capsules and pour the powder into your drink, but I kinda don't like what it does to the flavor, so I tend to just do the capsules.

Even simpler is just to use HEED--coming from Cytomax you'll think you've died and gone to heaven, and HEED itself has sufficient electrolytes for all but the hottest days.

Oh, and if you're ordering from Hammer, check my sig--you can get a discount on your first order.

Yes and no--if your stomach is sensitive while training/racing, the big salt load might make you even more nauseated or cause stomach cramps. A few people had similar problems with Gatorade Endurance, which is a high-sodium version of Gatorade.

Endurolytes seem a little gentler, so you may have good luck with them.
