Subject: To wear my wetsuit or not?
I am doing an Oly in 2 weeks. The race will be wetsuit legal as its in Mass and really our waters up here never get to the 80 degree mark anyways. I did an OLY a few weeks ago and did NOT wear my suit. The swim was great - I did notice my legs feel wobbly coming out of the water.
Fast forward a few weeks. I went for an OWS yesterday followed by a Bike Ride and for the first time I wore a wetsuit I bought a few years ago and had never worn (I had a baby so my triing ceased until now). Although it took me 1/3mile to get used to wearing it - the swim was fine. I was getting a little hot in it (its a full sleeved suit) -but  I did notice that there was no "wobbly feel" to my legs afterward the swim and my legs felt just fine as I began the bike.

So my question is this - does the wetsuit help "save" your legs? Should I wear it to my next Oly on August 30th. I am afraid of overheating but also would like my legs to feel good coming out of the swim. (I did really crappy on my run at my last Oly - I think I hit the wall). I do not care about speed in my swim portion - I am more worried about overheating, time to get the suit off, etc. But if it will keep my legs from tiring - maybe its worth it?

Are wetsuits known to "save" your legs?

Thanks in advance
Claudia

You get increase bouyancy from wearing a wetsuit. Your legs don't have to kick as hard to keep the lower half of your body afloat. I wore a suit for a 1/4 mile swim and my time per 100 yards went from about 2:00 minutes to 1:33! I wound up losing all that time in transistion so I plan on wearing one for any swim over 440 yards.

I think the good outweighs the bad for your race.

I'd wear it.  I'm a swimmer and I never thought I would choose to wear one - but they make a huge difference in terms of how you feel when you get out of the water (as you noticed) and your speed.

Although they are a little tricky to get out of until you get the hang of it - I still think the benefits outweigh the cost.

I CAN swim without one and do OK, but I tend to feel like poop after a non-wetsuit swim. If it's legal, I'd wear it. You would think that the extra 30sec-1min in T1 is a big deal, but the wetsuit saves me time on all 3 legs, especially the bike.

A friend, a former collegian swimmer who typically came out of the water in the top 3 overall, always opted for the wetsuit.  Good enough for me.

I always wear my wetsuit (if it is legal).

Hint for getting the wetsuit off faster - cut the legs.  All you need to do is cut the bottom 1.5 to 3 inches off of the legs.  This will make getting the wetsuit off much easier and will not hurt the wetsuit.  I do this to every wetsuit I buy.

I generate a lot of heat swimming. I am a FOP top 5% (+ or -) out of the water in local events. In my last Oly the announcer kept warning of the warm water and encouraged people with full suits to go without. I opted to swim nude only to find nearly everyone wearing one. I gave up at least 90 seconds to the field as a result. I'd recommend that you swim with a suit whenever it is legal (people on this forum have said this before - I should have listened)

So what is the worst that could happen? You get too warm. If that happens try the following.

1) Take your cap off after the swim starts. You can do this by putting your goggles on under your cap and leave the cap loose on your head. (gosh I don't know how it came off).

2) Briefly pull the neck of your wetsuit open in the front and let some cool water in.

3) If you are still too warm just swim easier. Chance is that you will be going as fast as you would swimming hard without a wetsuit and using less energy at the same time. That is energy you can use later in the race.

4) If you feel you are still overheating you can always pull you zipper down the middle of your back, but I can't see that ever being necessary at a wetsuit legal race.

Great advice. Thanks Bob for the pointers on if I get too hot. I posted a poll on the Mass forum to see how many BT'ers were wearing one and the majority is going to wear one.

I am going to try swimming in it today in warmer waters to see how I feel. I am leaning towards wearing it after what everyone has said.

Thanks guys
