My job is pretty unpredictable.  I can get called into work at all hours of the day and night.  Some long days and even longer nights.  My question is, is it better to still try and get a workout in even if it is a horrible workout?  Or do I take a day off and come back fresh?  I don't want to discourage myself with bad workouts, but I also don't want to take to many days off, cause we all know how easy one day off can turn into two months off.

I think you said it pretty well already. You dont want one or two days to turn into months. I only recently got back into training after an abysmal race in March. The way I look at it, if you need it, take some time off. However, if you take one day off, make sure you train extra hard the next day. After all, you should be more refreshed then, right?

Yeah, I tend to agree with you.  I have tried working out when I am really tired and just don't really think it's worth it.  I actually missed yesterday's work out(Became an Uncle for the second time), and I actually felt weird missing a work out. I don't think I will miss to many.

I have this same problem. Damn jobs. Anyway, I say do what you can just to keep your metabolism up and dumb down the workout if you need. I often have the crap beat out of me at work or work some idiotic overnite maintenance window activity but usually feel better after a workout. As always, listen to the body, but don't let laziness take hold like I sometimes do.

I try not to miss workouts, because like you said, it seems to become a pattern. Often times I will just scale back my workout. Instead of doing a 6 mile tempo run, I might just go out to do a 3 mile slow run. Oftentimes though, when I get started, I feel okay and end up doing my original planned workout, anyway.

Dont skip! even if you go for ten minutes, in my opinion, its better than nothing! And the fact is, Ive had some of my most productive workouts when I didnt feel like going or didnt think I had it in me to do well. If I took the outlook that I would only go train when I feel 100%, then I would train about two days a month! SERIOUSLY!  You will enjoy plenty of great workouts in the future if you just make a deal with yourself that you will go ahead and try anyway. Good Luck!

Craig Alexander said he starts every workout he schedules.  He may not do it according to schedule, but he starts it.

I think thats really important to build a habit and a work ethic.  At least work out for 10 minutes.  If you still feel like crap, then pack it in.

I just want to thank everyone for the comments.  I work a pretty high stress job so for the most part I think it will be more beneficial for me to stick to my planned workouts.
