Subject: HRM during race
ok one more question! newbie using a HRM for the first time during a race. (garmin forerunner 305)
So i just figured out how to use the multi sport function... ill plan to strap it on during T1. my question is how do you use the heart rate monitor during the race? The run seems easy... im guessing i will just set an alert for a certain pace. Im having trouble figuring out what to do for the bike portion. Do i just use it for distance data? or would you recommend use heart rate alerts?  How do you use it?
Thanks!

Good question... and is bad etiquette to have it start beeping on the side of the hills?

I set mine up with 4 data screens.  The four for the bike are:
Speed, HR, Dist, Time

For the run I show:
Lap Pace, HR, Dist, Time

I am curious as well, this is like my 7th tri, but my first with a HRM (I was slow to get on this bandwagon). Since it cannot time me during the swim, I wonder if I should wear 2 watches, one for my HR and another for my total time. It is tempting not to wear the HRM and just the watch, because it would be a huge hassle getting on in T1, as well as worrying about wearing 2 watches or worrying about what the actual time is.

SO the trick I like with the forerunner is to turn it on just before the race to locate the sattelittes and put it in the bking mode.  Then I turn it off and attach it to the aerobars (I have the velcro strap).  Then I turn it on either in T1 or once I am on the road.  Usually I just leave it on the aerobar but as I get closer to T2 I transfer it to my wrist setting up for the run.  That was on my HIM.

For the IM I plan to do the same but I will also have a standard timex watch on the other wrist to wear throughout the race.  I have heard that the forerunner runs out of juice after about 8-10hours and I plan to be out there longer than that.

I use my 305 for the full race. Every tri I have been in gives a swim cap, so I put the 305 with the quick release pins in a ziplock, and that inside my swim cap.  Keeps it dry the whole time and even gets my swim times.

Bike(Main Screen 1) I show, Lap time, Lap Speed, HR, Cadence (I have a different monitor for distance otherwise I would swap that with speed)

Run(Main Screen 2) I show Lap time, Lap Pace, HR, Lap Distance

Put the watch in Multisport, press it through my cap to start, press lap when I cross into T1, pull the cap off my head and have the unit out before i get to the bike.  Clip it in on the bike, hitting lap again as I head out of T1, Bike, hit lap into T2, Pull it off and put it on my wrist, hitting lap to enter the run and then finally lap when I finish.

I would stay away from HR alerts on the run it gets quite annoying for others if you are out of the range, I monitor mine enough to know when I need to adjust my speed etc.

thanks for the race etiquette... no alerts for the race, got it, thanks! Good idea with the swim cap.

what zones do you use for a sprint? do you keep your heart rate close to your LT the entire time? with a sprint last me an 1- 1 1/2 ours should i plan a heart rate below LT?

I turn my 305 on before I leave transition for the swim start, so it will be ready for the bike.  I wear my HR strap on the swim so I am ready to go when I get to the bike. Garmin is on a clip on the bike.

Bike:   4 data fields   Cadence - Speed - HR - Distance

From training I have an idea of how high I can push my HR and work to keep it there.

Run:  4 data fields     Avg Pace - Lap Pace - HR - Distance

Same thing.  I work to keep my HR at a good level until a mile or two or three to go (depends on run distance)  and just go for it.

Can't wait to get the 310XT.  Has a much longer bat life, and you can wear it on the swim.
