Subject: Need to vent about my cyclocross race
My tri season is over and I did my first cyclocross race of the year yesterday.  I had no clue how my race would go, but knew I had some good fitness lately.  I entered the 3/4 35+ category.  when the gun went off I felt like we were going slow, so that made me happy.  I managed to stay second wheel the first lap.  I slipped back a few spots the next lap and then started going back and forth with a few guys.  With 3 laps to go I drop one guy I am with and anthoer one comes up to me.  He is stronger on the wide open trail section, but I have him through all the tight turns and dismount sections.  I know I can drop him on the last lap.  The bell is ringing for the last lap and I am racing for 6th place he comes my attack..........pssssstttttt.  Rear tire goes flat as I come up to the pit.  I have no spare wheels or bike in the pit and decide to ride the last
2km on a rear flat (that is why tubular cross tires are far better than clinchers).  10 guys end up passing me, but I still beat my twin brother.  I have spent the last 24 hours trying to not be upset because I know I had the best race my body has been able to produce in 4-5 years, but at the same time 6th is so much better than 17th.  I am only slightly concerned about the actual damage to the tire since I am going to try and fix the tire with some Tufo sealant as that was only the 2nd ride on it.  Beating my brother does add some positive side to it all.  GRRRRRRRR.....

Sounds like you had a very solid race. Having a flat in a cross race is just part of it...I say you need to get a pit bike What tire pressure were you running?

I have my first practice race of the season Wed and not racing until October 3rd and 4th.

Bummer about flat on second ride with your tubular...may be better option but so much more expensive.

Yesterday I built up portable PVC barriers to practice dismounts, carrying and remounting...hope to try them out once daughter gets home from school. Only cost $12 and didn't take much time at all to do.

My brother built to PVC barriers that we practice with.  There is also a good training race in Londonderry, NH if that is not to far for you to travel on Wednesday nights.  If I were to get a second cross bike my wife would kill me right now.  I did have two cross bikes 8 years to go and it was nice, but that was pre-wife/kids.

I was running about 35 PSI.  It was a big nail that caused the flat so nothing I could have done about that.

My husband would kill me too if I suggested I needed a second cross bike but I like the idea. I have thought of getting second set of cross tires and putting them on one of my other sets of wheels since all three of my main bikes have the same Mavic wheels.

Wrentham has practice cross races 8 minutes from my house so I go there and race with all the guys.

Are you doing any of the Verge races? I'm sure we'll bump into each other this fall some where. What race do you usually race in? Me easy only one women's race I qualify where cat 4 women race that's where I'll be.

I have not thought of what races I am going to do yet, but Velocross in Londonderry, maybe Amesbury or West Hill, maybe Canton.  I depends on how far the race is, what time I would race and how quickly I can get back for my sons football games.  I did not take out a USAC license this year so it will be the Cat 4 or Cat 4 35+.

A majority do have dedicated cyclocross bikes as they are faster than a mtn bike on a true cross course, but do not be scared away if you only have a mtn bike and want to give one a try.

I plan to do Canton as that is close to me. Sunday's my daughter's have 2-3 soccer games so it depends what time the cross race is and how far from home. I try and race most weekends since cross season is short and it is so fun.

Some folks do use MTB but not many..once they try it and like it, folks invest in cross bike..some are pretty cheap...since they get banged but there are some that have carbon frames and race on carbon wheels..not me...steel cross bike with 105/ultegra parts.
