Total Time = 1h 09m 8s
Overall Rank = 97/311
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 5/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke up 3 hours before the start. Had a whole wheat bagel w/ peanut butter and some gatorade.
Event warmup:

Got everything setup in transition. Found an open spot in the grass to stretch. Walked along the shore to see the swim course and took a quick dip in the lake to get a feel for the water.
Swim
  • 11m 27s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

Definitely one of my better swims to date (first time I've been in the top half overall for a swim). This is the first time I've actually been able to keep up with the pack instead of trailing behind. I definitely got kicked and hit much more than I'm used to, but it didn't really seem to phase me very much. My sighting is also getting much better. Or at least it seemed that way, but it didn't take much since I really just looked at whoever was swimming beside me to see if I was on course.
What would you do differently?:

I'll try starting out in the middle of the pack next time and see if I can still hold my own. I lolly-gagged a little too much when we were wading out to the start and I wasn't where I wanted to be when the gun went off. Eh, not the end of the world.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

It was only a 10 mile ride so I went without my gloves. Also put my socks and shoes on standing up instead of sitting down. Surprised myself that I was able to keep my balance so well after the swim. Best T1 time to date.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to get into shoes once I'm on my bike and moving.

Comments:

2ND IN MY AGE GROUP AND 21ST OVERALL ON THE BIKE!!!!! The course had it's fair share of hills and I spent alot of time out of the saddle. But whether I was going up or down hill, I was passing people. I can't believe that I've actually gotten to the point of being good at one of the three events. All those lonely hours on the Trinity Trails are starting to pay off. Why doesn't BT have a ranking better than 'good' for me to select? Screw 'good', this ride was fantastic!
What would you do differently?:

Started to run out of gas going up the final big hill before we went back into the park. More hill work. Definitely more hill work.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Stumbled a little as I got off my bike and the side of my shoe got caught on my frame. Threw me off my game when I could have run faster with my bike. Again balanced on one foot to change shoes and had no problems. Fastest T2 time to date.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to get out of my shoes before I dismount and jump off my bike running.
Run
  • 27m 41s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

One of my faster runs but could have been better. Shouldn't have drank the whole cup of water at the first aid station. I could feel is sloshing around in my stomach at the half-way point. Would have done more good by pouring it on my head. Started out a little too fast, but kept up a sub-9:00 mile pace, which is quite good for me.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate more toward the end of the bike and less on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Took me a minute to find the refreshments afterwards. Got myself an orange, bottle of AminoVital (I love that about PlayTri races!), banana, bagel, pita bread, hummus, greek salad. Great food compared to your average race. Watched the rest of the finishers come in as I talked with Steve and David from BT. Hung around to watch the awards ceremony then headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim: nothing except my own weakness. Solution: swim lots.
Bike: need to mix in some more hill work and cut down on my total mileage
Run: more speed workouts
Transitions: a little clumsy here and there. Solution: more races.

Event comments:

I love PlayTri races! Staci and Ahmed do a great job. This was a good fun course and a great race for first timers to learn how everything comes together. Crowds were big and loud. The food afterwards was top notch. There's not a whole lot more that I could have asked for. This was another PR: by 17 minutes today and I was in the top 1/3 overall for the first time. So my training is making a big difference as I go. It still looks like I'll peak in September just in time for my first 1/2 IM.

Great race!  I'm really glad to see how your training is paying off.  It seems like you just keep getting better, and that is just plain COOL.

Real proud of ya, bro!

Congrats on the new PR! I guess those 700+ bike miles this month really paid off. 2nd in your age group on the bike is awesome. I also think your bike strength will really pay off for you in your HIM. I think the hills are a really good idea. I can't fit in the miles on the bike you can so I try and make up for it with some hill repeats once a week. I think it has really improved my cycling. Still no were close to your league though. Congrats again.

Just saw your post and wanted to tell you AWESOME job. This was my first Tri and I was nervous as hell. I remember seeing you right before the swim and then again at the run... Well, how could anyone have missed you with that flag ;o) (Talked to you for just a second after the race thanking you for carrying it.)

How long have you been doing this now? And where do you go train the swimming part around here??? I am excited about the Tri's and am really hooked now!!!
