Pre-race routine:

Rack bike, layout transition.
Event warmup:

After putting on wetsuit, quick dip in the water to cool down and warmup for the swim.
Swim
  • 20m
  • 500 meters
  • 04m / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first 500m swim and the race goal was to complete the swim without encountering any difficulties. Stroke was 90% breaststoke and 10% freestyle.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work on the swim technique to switch to 90% freestyle and be more efficient through the water.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Easy transition as it wasn't crowded, found the bike easy and wetsuit came off easier than I had expected.
What would you do differently?:

As I was still grinning from completing the swim I took the transition quite easy and good have been much faster.
Bike
  • 40m
  • 20 kms
  • 30.00 km/hr
Comments:

Flat easy course, noticed moving from the try-a-tri to the Sprint less mountain bikes and people to draft. Very concious of drafting roadies that I was doing twice the amount of work they were to keep up with them. Was aware not to push to hard in the big rings otherwise would strain my knees for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a Road Bike !!!
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Dropped off bike, no need for hat or sunglasses as it was neither warm or Sunny, had a Gu gel and some water.
What would you do differently?:

Drop wetsuit into box during T1 so I wouldn't think about it going missing during the event and have to find it during T2 and verify it was my Black Orca suit.
Run
  • 25m
  • 5 kms
  • 05m  min/km
Comments:

Great run, good pace for me and enjoyed the run. Have seen a massive improvement over the last 4/5 weeks since the last race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched legs and enjoyed the supplied muffins and drinks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As this was my first Sprint the goal was to complete the race and enjoy the experience (which I did) and subsequently wasn't as fast as possible. My Swimming technique is improving but I only started swimming in the last six weeks or so and the breastroke is not the most efficient stroke.

I think I have reached the limit of speed using my hardtail Mountain Bike averaging around 28-30ks an hour and that a Road bike would make some difference.

I trained a lot over the last 4 weeks since the previous race and that made today easier once I had my head sorted with the Swim.

Really enjoyed my first Sprint race and bring on the next one ;-)

Hey Guy, awesome race you had!  When I said that your bike was smokin' in your blog the other day, I didn't realise you had done it all on a mountain bike, thats awesome!!  If you got a road bike, just think how fast you would be then!!

Indeed, looking out for a Road bike now. We have a roadtrip through the US planned for March so hunting out LBS for suitable bikes. Will probably get a road bike and put aero bars on rather than a true tri bike.

Nice bike Kelly, I was thinking of a Scott. If you don't mind how much did you pay, assume you brought it in CHC.

Hey there, I paid just over $3,000, including aerobars ($295), cycle computer etc, the actual bike price was $2,799 and they gave me a little discount and a free cycle jersey.   The one I got is second from the top of the range for their road bikes (I think they also have a racing series which goes into full carbon).  It is awesome to ride, and I was really surprised that I was a 'small' as my other road bike the Trek is a 56cm which is a large.
Although when I bought the Trek, I didn't know much about bikes and I could tell pretty quickly that it is too big.  Still good to ride though after a few adjustments.

The small frame is a great fit, heaps more efficient, and no sore shoulders/neck anymore!

Good luck with finding a great bike, let me know how you get on :-)
