Subject: Just donated blood

Hello All, I just donated blood an hour ago, and still want to get in a light run tonight (2.5 miles). I have found threads on here about racing after donating, but nothing about a short run. I usually run around 930pm, and tonight my nephew will be joining me. So worst I can see happening is I could pass out and get in a 10 minute nap as he calls my wife. j/k I wouldn't push myself that far just for a short run. So if anyone has any advice about this let me know.

Thanks,
Adam

Supposedly you should be able to do it, just drink a lot of water today and have a good meal. Personally, however, I tend to find myself very fatigued that night and the next day and typically turned it into a rest day.

Thanks for the input. I have always felt 100% after donating blood, but this is also the first time I have donated since I started seriously running. I will contine to hydrate and eat as I normally would. Then come run time, I will see how it goes.

Thanks Again,
Adam

I donated on Friday too, and did a 30 minute run and swim about 4 hours later. On Saturday I did a 20 mile ride and Sunday a 35 miler. Just drink a little extra fluid and you should be fine

Thats what I wanted to hear. I really wanted to donate, and still stick to my training plan. I will plan my donating better when I get into my TRI and 1/2 Mary training.

WooHoo, I'm ready to run......wait, gotta get more water.

Thanks Again.

Ok I learned my lesson. From now on I will run in the morning before donating, and wait again until the following evening to run. About a mile into my run I was extremely tired and breathing rapidly/shallow. Then I checked my HRM and saw it topping 190, so I decided to walk the rest of the way home. Felt like I ran 5 miles, and as I was walking I noticed it was difficult to walk in a straight line. Just glad I didn't pass out.

Get plenty of fluids, plenty of carbs before hand and realize it will seem harder because you have less RBC to carry oxygen now.
