Pre-race routine:

This was my first race. No routine to speak of other than drink alot and try not to be nervous.
Event warmup:

Got in the water early to do a little swimming. I had not practiced open water swimming for years. Swimming was fine and got used to the temperature real quick.
Swim
  • 14m 8s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Start was really bad. Fought back the first 120 meters till I took a foot to the throat. Had to pull up and cough out all the water. Canoe folks were nice, asked if I wanted to hang on or get in, I said no and just breast stroked for a minute or two, then resumed freestyle. Heartrate never really came down and I was short of breath the whole time. That was different than I was expecting.
What would you do differently?:

Start late. Just wait a minute or two then go.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

T1 went well, took a moment to try and calm myself from the swim experience.
What would you do differently?:

Not try to remove my wetsuit top with goggles and cap in hand. It won't all fit through the hand opening.
Bike
  • 37m 51s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
Comments:

I got passed alot.
What would you do differently?:

I tryed to hang right as much as I could so people could pass, but I needed to pass a few people up hill so I took over to the left a few times. 4 wide at one point, little nervous.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Good transition, still felt strong. As I was racking the bike and putting on my shoes they announced the winner. Oh well, I wasn't out here to do anything other than finnish. But it did motivate me well in the run.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less. I felt watered down the first 3/4 mile.
Run
  • 29m 40s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run. Good support from everyone who could see I was about to die. Things got better after the turn, then it was all downhill.

I got passed alot.
Post race
Warm down:

Eat oreo, drink water. Walk around a bit to relax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me. I will train faster from here on.

Event comments:

A good time. I learned alot and had alot of fun.

Great first effort!

I don't know what it was about this race, maybe the narrow start area, but the swim was a brawl.

Nice work on your first race.  Sounds like the swim was tough for everyone!  the water temp probably didn't help either.

Was anyone else thrown by the limestone trail? Not so much that it wasn't paved, but it was pretty steep on the sides at some points.
