Overall Rank = 269/291
Age Group = F 30-34 novice
Age Group Rank = 14/16
Pre-race routine:

I packed up everything the night before and took some Sudafed to try to fight off the head cold I was dealing with. Woke up at 5:30, forced down a bowl of oatmeal and hopped in the car
Event warmup:

I was so nervous for this race for some reason, I couldnt relax and decided I just didnt want to know how cold the water was.
Swim
  • 18m 6s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Why on earth did I not practice swimming in the wetsuit I borrowed prior to using it on race day? This swim was my best yet ONLY because I actually put my face in the water and did the crawl, I utilized what I learned all winter in the pool: bi-lateral breathing, sighting, deep breaths. The wetsuit made it so much easier to swim, but it was too small and I couldnt take a deep breath! So I flopped around in the water for a couple minutes trying to unzip it. Finally I got the top 1/2 off and was able to swim but by then I was so freaked out I spent a lot of time calming myself down.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a wetsuit. Well, I need to start swimming outside in a wetsuit that fits.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I was so happy to be alive after the swim that I walked up the hill to T1. I let myself just go slow to bring my heart rate down (must have been at least 185) and calm down.

HOWEVER- this was my first transition taking off a wetsuit. I did ok, minimal hopping around on one foot while tugging on wetsuit. ha ha.

oh yes and this was also my first time with real bike shoes now that I have a fancy bike!
What would you do differently?:

No wetsuit, no socks.
Bike
  • 42m 37s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 15.77 mile/hr
Comments:

I love my bike. No seriously I suck at swimming at running and I just LOVE cycling all thanks to my new road bike. I chilled out for the first 1/2 mile after that insane swim to let my heartrate settle down. Then I went for it - I even hit 35 mph off that downhill (I love that!). I cornered well too.

And to that girl drafting off of me - you KNOW that is illegal, you even apologized for doing it but if you cant pass me you are supposed to drop back. loser.

What would you do differently?:

Not sure, I am really happy with my bike performance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

I love these questions - "riding with feet on top of shoes" ARE YOU INSANE???? T2 was ok, but I seriously go slow here for some reason I cant explain. I think I am procrastinating the run.
What would you do differently?:

get a move on! stop lollygagging around and just run!
Run
  • 31m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a great strong run for a change. I think I was in the same pack as some of you as I too ran off course - why wasnt there a sign or an official for such a strong right hand turn???? why???? so I am taking 5 minutes off my total time to make myself feel better.
What would you do differently?:

not much other than run more and run longer distances (oh goodie!).
Post race
Warm down:

I went back onto the run course to cheer on a friend and make sure she didnt miss that turn so I jogged a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My brain. my heart rate, my wetsuit and the MIA official on that right hand turn for the run.

Event comments:

I was impressed with this race, but I gotta tell ya - it SUCKS that a race official wasnt there (how bout a sign?) to tell folks to turn right. I mean I only had less than a 1/2 mile to go. boooo!

And, can we speed up the awards ceremony?

Sounds like we must have been running pretty close together - since we both missed the turn.  I was the 46yo Clydesdale, huffing and puffing to finish...  The swim was tough for everyone judging by different comments.  Congrats on the time and the finish.  Are you doing Mistletoe next?

Great race! Sorry about the trouble with the wetsuit. I was using a new wetsuit, but thankfully it fit. You can rent wetsuits which we did that for the SGI race on April 8. We ended up not needing them, but it was good to get one and try it out in the water. I am with you on the feet on top of the bike shoes thing.

We are doing Yargo next...not sure about mistletoe, but we are signed up for it!

We will look for you if you are at Yargo...look for us!

Good report. Congrats on the road bike. Cycling is tough, but isn't it great? While I didn't get caught up in the now infamous directional issue on the run, I have to agree that the awards ceremony was right out of Tolstoy. Someone should referee that thing for penalties.

Enjoy the rest of the season.

Ooh - what did I miss at the awards ceremony? Was it juicy?

Great race all - Di, I was right with you on the missed turn (the bright red, heart-attack looking guy in a blue one-piece). Didn't make a huge difference, because slow is slow, but still a little disheartening.

See y'all next time around,
Josh

That was me. Thanks! I have noticed that Brandy has competed in a lot of the Tri-in the parks races.
