Subject: Official race time wrong - manual timing

Ran a trail race yesterday afternoon where timing was manual. When I crossed the finish line I was just behind another runner. However, when they posted the results this morning he ended up with my time (about 5+ seconds on his time). And I ended up with an extra 35 seconds added to my time and supposedly someone right behind me (there was no one behind us for the 30 seconds we were in the recovery line.

This isn't a big deal except that they have a Challenge going with other races they organize which sets me - and the other guy - back for the next race. Plus, after 10k filled with snow, ice, huge snowdrifts  and wind all at 7°F, I'd like to have my real race time shown officially. Has anyone ever has this happen? And what have you done? Contact the organization? What did they do/say?

Thanks for any advice.

I think you pretty much have to protest the results on site when they are posted. Use your own watch or GPS device and if you can get the other 2 runners involved to back you up the better. The RD wants the results to be correct but if you wait you are probably stuck with them. Tough to hang out in bad conditions to wait on the results though.

Yeah, if you can get the other two racers to join you in communicating with the RD that will help your chances.

I did a sprint tri last year, more for fun, it was manually timed, and my friend and I crossed the finish line at exactly the same time.  It turned out to be for 3rd place overall.  They had him 35 seconds ahead of me in the results, huh?  No big deal, it was more for fun and a good cause AND he's a much better runner than I so he jogged the run to stay with me.

I always finish first so there's no doubt about where I placed.

Were you competing for a top overall spot?

If it was MOP I wouldn't worry about it.

You know your time.

happened to me in Melbourne Marathon - my race number (with timing chip inside) had flipped up so it didn't set at the start and i was 2mins behind I know!  I wrote to the organisers and they changed it for me.

However my finisher's certificate still has the 2min defecit on it but the official result booklet has the correct time...oh well I finished, I wasn't FOP in fact BOP by far!

I do computerized chip timing and sorry to say you generally have 1 hour post race rewards being announced to dispute your individual time. I cant speak for other teams but we are generally very accommodating, if you have a garmin or something similar we will usually change your official time. I imagine if you could get a big enough collective of people with wrong times it will be changed though. Timers are usually independent from the RD so the person you really want to get in contact with is the race coordinator.

It sounds like the times and the positions are 'out' by one position. I would guess there will be many people with inaccurate times, and as many complaints to the RD. This may help, as you will not be the only ones.
