I'd give it a try. I can see how it might be a little dry without the gravy.

I wonder what is in his batter, it looks a little thicker than milk/buttermilk, egg and some spices. Is it single, double or triple dipped, just the batter, dry then batter, or dry wet dry?

I wonder if the is a way to turn the gravy into deep fried gravy balls. The candy coat it. Then cover it all in cheese. Then deep fry the whole works. Then candy coat that. Then....
