A couple of weeks ago I posted a threat about ghost shifting on my tri bike. Chain links weren't stiff, cable tension was A-Okay, the adjuster screws were even, and everything seemed alright so I had no clue why it was doing that.

I think I found the problem. I couldn't see it from a side view, but from a top view a link on the chain looks like its going to break. I'm afraid this warrants a new chain -.- I'd rather not have it snap in the middle of a long ride 60 miles away from home.

If the chain is fairly new, you could just replace that link with a repair/quicklink instead of replacing the whole thing.

I didn't know you could do that!! thanks. that'd be a much cheaper option. But is that something that would cause the shifting issue?

Yes, especially with the tight spacing of 10- and 11-speed systems. A FUBAR'd link like that can definitely cause shifting issues. Just give it a quick fix with a speed link (or whatever brand you can find). You could even take a link out (if you have space for it).

I got a KMC chain link replacement and it doesn't look AS bad but its still a little off. here's a picture, its the two right where my fingers are (they're both the snap replacements; one was already on the chain where I used it and the one that busted was right next to it)

it does look better but its not quite as tight as the other links, though that'd probably be impossible with replacements.

I think it was just when I first bought the new chain I didn't know how to swap it out with the EZ link, so I went ahead and undid a pin just enough to take out some links to get it to the right length. When I put it back it might have been at an angle instead of the force being perfectly in line with it or I could have over-under tightened it.
