Hi everyone, my name is Christopher Ambrose, and I am beginning to train for a triathlon that I hopefully plan on doing next year. I want to finish well, so that's why I'm giving myself so long to train. I plan on maybe doing a bicycle marathon this fall, because a couple of cycling stores around me host them in the fall. I have one interesting challenge approaching me though, since I am 6'4" and i weigh 205ish pounds, which I was told was large in height and weight for an endurance athlete. I am currently alternating between running and cycling, and I am going to begin swimming soon. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please give them to me. BTW I am 18 and in good cardiovascular health, if that matters to anyone.

I'm 6'4" and 230+.  I raced today and a 6'5" guy won the entire event.  Your ideal weight may not be too far from where you are at...besides the cardo will do you good no matter what.   Don't sweat the height or weight or give up on tri's because of size.  You'll miss out on too much!

Anyway, welcome to BT.  You've found a great place for info and support!

Tri hard, rest harder!

I never planned on giving up, but it's good to know that other guys that are my size and bigger are not only doing tri, but succeeding at it. Thanks for the encouragement.

yeah do no give up. I did my first tri this weekend. It took me forever but I have not swam in 1 1/2 years and I have a hybrid bike. a very cheap one. needless to say I am 6'6" and 305 and I still finished it. I am also an ultra marathoner and I think that helped a little bit.

I have the Trek 7.2 fx. The fx series are their more performance hybrid bike. It is more road bike than mountain bike. It was also only around $360 I beleive. I am slow on the bike but maybe its more because I am so heavy and so tall than the bike inself.

Well, I'm 6'4, so do you have a suggestion for a cheaper bike for me. I am a college student and am on a pretty tight budget. Also, do tri's use a road bike or a hybrid. I'm not sure. Thanks.

typically they use road bike unless there is a reason not to like the off road tris use a mountain bike. Hyrids tend to be half the price of a road bike but a road bike or I guess a tri bike would be better if you can afford it. Trek hybrids start around $350 and I think there raod bikes start at $699 but I am not sure. I can fit in the largest hybrid bike. 27in I beleieve is the size. I bet you could fit in a 63 cm road bike but I know very little about biking.

Do not except to out race anyone on a road or tri bike with a hybrid. They more allow to give you a taste. I know my bike time for my try was 5 mins slower than the second slowest person on the bike. I also was not the only one with a hybrid but most use road or tri bikes from what I have seen. You may be able to pick up an older road bike for cheap. that may be better than a new hybrid.

I am new to the sport also. I did the tri because I bought the bike due to a running injury. I told myself if I ever got a bike that I would fit in I would do a triathlon. It was fun minus it took me over 2x longer than anyone to do the swimming.
