Subject: View triathlon as one sport instead of three? I've been a runner for 15 years. In the fall of 2017, after a year or two of constant injuries, I decided to do some triathlon training for the 2018 season. I did a olympic distance and a sprint in 2014 so I had some idea of what I was getting myself into.
Since cutting back on running and doing some biking and swimming instead I have missed zero workouts due to injury. I also love the variation of triathlon training and my last 8-9 months of training has been great.
Last weekend i did my first half-ironman and was very pleased with my race (finished in 5:46 ).
I've been doing 7-8 workouts per week since march in preparation for the HIM but I don't think that number of workouts is sustainable if I want to do this sport for years to come. I could probably make my schedule work but I'm just not the kind of guy who want to do that amount of training. I'd rather do about 6 workouts per week (2 per sport ), with one day off per week.
Of course I will not be aiming to do any long triathlons on this training, likely nothing more than olympic distance.
Problem is that I have a hard time believing that you can make any progress with only 2 workouts per sport and week. Is this true or should I view triathlon as one sport and consider 6 workouts per week a reasonable amount of training for a middle-/back of the pack casual athlete? As a long time runner it's especially hard to accept doing only 2 or max 3 runs per week. |
