I was just reading my most recent edition of Triathlete. The article is titled 'You can take it with you’. I am a product representative for a biotech company and therefore spend a lot of time traveling. As you can imagine it is difficult to maintain training regimes. I was inspired at the thought that I could utilize the small hotel pools as swimming is the most difficult to find facilities to train while on the road.

Has anyone used a tether cord trainer for swimming? Is it a good training method or is it one that creates too many problems then it solves?

Thanks,

I bought my wife a tether cord for Christmas (yes, I admit, I bought it so I could use it too) and at first she thought it was a lame gift. She is currently out of town and just had a chance to use it in one of those small hotel pools. She was very pleased with the workout. She didn't mention any problems other than because you're not moving, your swimming creates a lot of waves. However, she said that this was just like the start of a triathlon swim so it was good training. She counted the number of strokes she took in an effort to approximate how far she swam and to relive the boredom of swimming in one place.

Do you remember which system you purchased. There are so many available.

Thanks

I just got mine a couple weeks ago. My backyard pool is 36 ft long, so doing laps is impossible. I've done 45min workouts and the time goes by OK. I'm never an "indoor" exerciser; I'm one of those people who will use a treadmill 1x yearly and run outside no matter what. I ride in any weather and spin only in classes for the social aspect more than the workouts.

The trainer is good. Not my first choice, but good. It beats doing laps and I manage to want to use it. The other poster was right; it creats lots of turbulence and waves. Get the pool to yourself if possible or it soon will be once you start.

I boutght the short cord version of this: Decent value I think.

I travel for work a lot as well and I usually take one with me (knock-off I bought at the LBS).  It's very useful and I recommend it for anyone who travels even a few times per year while they're training but I will say that the only thing worse than doing mind numbing laps in a pool for a long workout (I definitely prefer OWS) is staring at the same spot and trying to imagine how far you would have gone.

Never used one, but I imagine they are good for getting your HR up but not good for working on technique.  You obviously will have no glide... and I suspect your stroke will automatically modify itself to compensate.
