Hello all!

Just moved to the Tampa Bay area from Cleveland, OH. I am currently in Riverview. I would love to get into triathlons but my swimming sucks. If anyone knows of any programs and if they could post here, that'll be fantastic!

Seems like cycling on city streets is quite dangerous here. If there is anyone who wants to buddy up with me to make the trek where there are hills (I guess close to Orlando??), I would love it.

Welcome to year round training!

The Suncoast Tri at Ft. DeSoto Park is coming up October 27th and should be a fairly easy entry into Triathlon.

Check out their website - they have a beginner clinic coming up as well that should help you with the swim. October 14th is the next clinic.

This will be my 2nd Tri, but I have seen the course at an event I volunteered at. Will be flat and fast.

Can't help you with the hills - I live in Pinellas - only bridges.

Enjoy!

Welcome to BT.  I'm actually moving to Brandon (over by the mall) in 2 weeks.

There are "okay" hills in San Antonio (30 minutes north) and the "mountains" of Florida in Clermont (about an hour or so away, near Orlando).

I'm going to be training for IMKY next year, so I'll definitely be into hill training.  If you're looking for flats, go over to Flatwoods Park.  11 mile of pristine paved blacktop with no traffic.

loutalarico: That triathlon is too soon for my swimming abilities :-)

Thanks for the responses. I will check out both San Antonio and Flatwoods Park.

That is what I thought too, about my cycling ability: Bought new road bike after only mountain biking for the last 15 years, only 1 month before the Sand Key tri. Then realized it is too large and road bike shoes hurt my feet. Also, not comfortable with 210 pounds on 700X23 tires.

I am not a strong swimmer but finished the swim in under 16 minutes with broken goggles. It sounds like you would make up any time in the bike, even if you doggie paddled for the 1/3 mile. The run off the bike was the toughest part at 7 minutes over my normal 5K.

If I can do it...you can.

I'm in the Tampa area and will be training for IM WI over the next year so will be biking as much hills as possible. San Antonio is decent, like the previous poster stated. North on I-75. You really need to go out there with a guide or group especially for your dirst few rides, but probably for every ride. Lots of different routes out there and easy to get lost if you don't know where yuo're going, as it's all open rural roads.

Haven't been to Clermont yet but I'm sure we will be hitting that up at least once a month when we get to actual Ironman training as opposed to just building and maintaining base.

Other bike trails besides Flatwoods would be Suncoast (about 40 miles one direction, mostly flat except up towards the end of the trail there are some rolling hills) and Withlacoochie Trail (nicetrail through small towns and parks, lots of shade, also roughly 40+ miles one direction.) Both of those trails are well-paved, have places to stop and re-fill water bottles, etc. My main places to ride consist of these 4, Suncoast, Flatwoods, San Antonio, and somewhat less, Withlacoochie. Will be adding Clermont to the mix soon.
