As a regular working class office guy (AKA "office stiff", I spend a good chunk of my day in the office and an hour or so of my time at home, on my laptop (for work).  I can only workout in the mornings because my schedule (both personal and professional) can change at any moment.  This makes meal planning a bit harder then it should be.  I am finding that meal planning is the hardest for me.  What to snack on and how to overcome the vending machine demons are my hurdles while at the office.

How do you guys overcome this challenge?

This is hard for me too and I do suck at planning...........BUT...........the key is really to plan ahead! Set out some snacks in baggies before hand and keep them in your refridge so you can grab and go. Bring one of those huge lunch boxes and just pack it in with healthier foods so you always have a stash in the work refridge. Think of it as a lifestyle change and you'll stick to it more!

Willpower, planning, standing in front of the vending machine and telling myself over and over "what a waste to spend money on", and DTFU!

I keep a steady supply of nuts (almonds usually), raisins, and snack packs of tuna in my file drawer as my backup plan.  Sometimes, (gag), I have canned chicken in there - make sure it's the more natural non-processed type.  I also throw in some graham crackers (or other grain types).  If you have a fridge at work - store some half-pint milk packs and/or cheese packs, and a couple pieces of fruit if you want.  Drinking water through the day, as is recommended, will also help curb snack attacks and may help satiate you through a meeting.

I try to snack a couple minutes before a long meeting, or if there's a break I snack then.

If I workout in the morning, I plan backwards.  So, if I can eat dinner at 6, then I know I can snack at 3, lunch at about 12:30, snack about 10:30, and eat breakfast right before going to work or on the way.  If I workout in the morning, I'll have water and a banana or half a clif bar before the workout, then have breakfast afterwards.

Hopefully this gives you an idea.

Let me know how you finally do it, 'cuz I got me the same problem. Make matter worse, there are several offices where chocolate is handed out freely and they are close enough for me to make multiple trips per day.

For me nutrition has always been a challenge. Being a mailman, i am walking all day (well from 930-330 about 10miles). So i am always eating/snacking. I don't want to get in the habit of Subway/Wendys/McDonalds. In hot weather, i also have to plan to hydrate thoroughly.

After a large breakfast - eggs, bagel, toast, juice - i'll have a yogurt about 900, jsut before i start my route. I always pack a lunch and have plenty of fluids. I'll snack on fig newtons during the morning - my lunch break around 100pm is sandwich (lunch meat, PBJ, tuna) another yogurt, some kind of fruit and bottle of Ensure nutritional drink. For the remaining couple hours, i will have a few more fig newtons or powerbar, bottle of sports drink and in warmer weather or "sweaty days" i'll take on some Endurolytes and more fluids.

I have trouble working out in the AM, so after work, while i am changing to go for workout, i'll have powerbar and hammergel 30 minutes before my workout. I don't really plan out calories or special things, i've learned over the years (20 of em) what works to keep my 'tank full'

I'm a nuts and raisins girl. And, I often have an apple or other piece of fruit. I get up at 5:00 & eat a bowl of cereal and am at work by 6:00. I usually work out on my lunch break (11:00) and don't eat lunch until after my workout (at my desk, working). So, if I don't have a morning snack, that means I go ~7 hours with no food, and makes for a cranky Deanna.

One thing I do is get out for a short walk whenever I take my lunch or break.  For some reason a brisk 20 minute walk helps with the vending machine temptation.

I also do what several others have suggested and have my own snacks at work.  I try to make them kind of like treats (e.g. today it was fresh blueberries) while still keeping it somewhat healthy.
