I have re-started my goal to be and stay an active triathlete. i am going the whole way to do an IM. this will take years and the whole concept is truly mind boggling and mind blowing.

From the first time i saw the IM, '82 the one where Julie Moss collapsed, i wanted to do one. I was a teen, and had no idea where to start, than as i got old i did other stuff. now am fat and in worse shape than any time in my life. I know what i am capable of doing, but always focused on the big picture, not the little scenes. I always quit, just before i could have achieved greatness. I could have.......if only............

Training for the IM, will be my way of changing and challenging myself. I did my first sprint this past spring, and loved it. I am starting out from scratch, building up my endurance and base miles. The 1200 yds of swimming, 30 min of running, 1.5+ hrs on the bike and the yoga and strength training are not much to some and huge to others, but it will tire me out.

For now I will struggle with remembering, to only worry about what i can do today, and try not to thing of the countless strides, strokes and revolutions it will take to get there.

I am fortunate to have a supportive wife and family, too.

Kevin

Yes...and no...

It's certainly an attainable goal (one I plan to accomplish next year).  WHEN do you want to finish your Ironman?

Do it.  Tell a friend what you want to do, a good friend that will actually have the balls to call you out if you quit.  That's what good friends are for.

Probably should set some concrete mini-goals along the way so you don't lose focus.  Maybe an Oly or two next summer (2009), an Oly and a half marathon or something in 2010, a half iron and marathon in 2011, and go big in 2012.

Fixed it...

Long hard road in front to you Kevin.  It's going to take some hard work and commitment  I'd suggest you have check out  the training plans available here on BT and elsewhere if you haven't do so already.

I also think the suggestion to set some milestones along the way is a good idea... Oly in 2009, etc.

BTW, how old are you, and what is your athletic background?  Are you truly starting from scratch or do you have some previous experience to fall back on?

I have a friend, that is training along with me, he might even do a sprint next year. he is not interested in competing, but in fitness and weight control.

This is approximately what i plan. With a sprint or two thrown in, to use as fitness test. I am also going to do a road race i used to promote, and still have the record for the slowest official finisher.

I am using one of the training plans from the site. I am almost 43. I ran middle distance in High School, and was very involved, as an athlete ans promoter in the local cycling scene up until rescently. I grew up swimming, and riding my bike everywhere. some where along the way i got to "busy". I weight 270 lbs, 100 more than when i got married, and am using this to help me regain my fitness, life and self esteem.

KML,

You story and mine are very similar. I also saw Julie Moss collapse on Wide Word of Sports. I was 320 when I started training 18 months ago. I am 250 now. I did my first Oly. this year 2008 and will do a half next year 2009 with a full IM in 2010. I plan to get down another 30 to 50 pounds this year so I can IM between 200 and 210. You certainly can do this. You will experience setbacks along the way, but that is what makes the process fun and interesting. I am currently experimenting with nutrition and hydration options. This makes my long training sessions more interesting.

Hi Kevin,

I'm sure you've heard it before, but the first thing I would suggest is getting a physical and talking with your doctor about your plans and goals, particularly if you're trying to achieve a significant weight loss.  You definitely want to start building your base and drop some weight before you start pushing the intensity too hard.  Give your joints and muscles used to the stress of exercising.  Time, not distance, should be the objective at first.

Running has always been my weak link, and I have found that the Galloway run/walk method works well for me.  Taking regular walk breaks let's me run longer/farther than I could otherwise.  I'm a bit older than you (55), but know as I age I also need more recovery time after hard workouts.

Good luck.

Mark
