Subject: Running in the Pacific Spirit Park - Current conditions?
Hello all!

Forgive me for interrupting, I cannot think of a better place to ask this question, please make a suggestion for another forum if you have a better idea.

I am wondering what the conditions are in the Pacific Spirit Park (UBC in Vancouver) currently with all the snow. I'd like to go check by myself but it's pretty far from my place and taking transit to get there will take a long time. (Dunno where the car is, somewhere under a snow bank in the driveway...)

Running in the city is not very pleasant right now but I thought maybe the park trails would be do-able.

Any ideas?

Again sorry for the interruption and thanks for your help.

Brigitte, a stranded runner in Vancouver

Hey Brigitte!

Nice to see you.  You are not interrupting anything!  I can't anser your question but probably someone else will be able to.  I've had to run in the snow for 2 weeks here.  We have at least 2 feet of the stuff still around.

Thanks Barb.

I ended up finding some info on Club Fat ' web site. Looks like there's a significant amount of snow (or mud or slush or otherwise unstable surface) everywhere in the park, and I can't find proper running cleats to wear (of course they all sold out the first few days of snow).

I might be condemned to the dreadmill again!!

How do you manage in your area?

The snow is dry and hard packed most of the time.  Jsut got back from a 5k run.  Slow but good.  -9C right now.

I've been running up cap road in the path in the snowbank.  My new trail shoes give great traction and the feet stay dry!  sometimetimes I sink in a bit but with a fast turnover you don't need to get wet.  Rain pants and coat and hat and gloves makes it all comfortable.  So how was your run?

I did go in the Pacific Spirit Park last Wednesday and it was variable. Salish trail was decent. There was a lot of snow and ice, but with some care one could have an enjoyable run. We came back on Hemlock for part of the way and at one point we stopped because we thought we had veered into a stream. Turned out it was not a permanent stream but just the way the trail was (with around 10 cm of water flowing down it). We managed to get back on Salish trail.

I haven't gone back since but I would assume that things might have turned into more of a wet mess in the meantime. I'll go back next Thursday, we'll see!

Hello

I ran in PS Park yesterday and after 20 minutes found an out and stayed on the roads. The trail had everything going on --- mud baths, lakes, ice, and some nice paths!

Tip: If you can't find cleats for snow running, put 15 or so 1/4" sheet metal screws into the soles of your oldest, ugliest runners and you have instant, cheap studded shoes that'll grip ice and snow nicely.... Hopefully you won't have occasion to use this advice until at least mid-November.

don't run there alone, there was a murder!  I guess everyone knows about that now, but stay safe on the trails!
