Subject: Just moved to Aurora/Denver area... swim instruction advice?

Didn't even know there was a CO specific forum on here.  Thanks for the heads up Kath2163!

Just moved to Aurora, CO last week.  We had originally had an apartment picked out down by Cherry Creek State Park but when that fell through at the last minute (being #1 on the priority list since April obviously doesn't mean squat) we had to make a last minute decision a week before moving and ended up with a very nice apartment but in a questionable neighborhood (right next to Fitzsimons medical campus).  The Mrs. will be going to pharmacy school there and her building is literally a couple hundred yards across the street from the front door.

Anyways... for those of you who might be familiar with the area... are there any (safe) places around that give adult (beginner) swim instruction.  I'm not opposed to traveling a little bit provided I don't have to go all the way down town.

I'm a bigger guy (5'10" / 260) and really want to get in shape so I can do a triathlon or two.  We've got a great 24 hour cardio theater gym downstairs, I've got my bike and trainer here with me... and the pool is awesome with a couple of lap lanes on one side.  I really REALLY want to learn how to swim.  I've put off thoughts of triathlon because of my inability to swim.  To tell you how good I am... when kicking while holding a kickboard... I go backwards.  I can kick off from the wall and after about 10 or 15 yards of going forward I slow and then actually start going backwards.  Also... I have this thing with putting my face in the water... I hold my breath.  I can't even breathe OUT with my face in the water.

My wife (who is a fish in the water and swam competitively in HS) can't even explain it.  I'm so far beyond abnormal in the water that she can't begin to instruct me.

Anyways... that's the background:  big guy, afraid of water, just moved to Aurora, wants to tri, can't swim, wants to learn, doesn't want to get mugged on the way!  =)

Advice?

Welcome to CO!

I have a lousy kick too and took a couple lessons -- instructor recommended using fins regularly to loosen up my ankles.  You'll have to force yourself to exhale with your face in the water -- you'll get used to it.

Can't help you with your other questions; I live in the foothills.

Thanks for the heads up!  I emailed Moe last night and she said you were a joy to work with Molly.  This is something I'll have to budget for... I'm sure such focused instruction doesn't come cheap (and wouldn't expect it to either).  I'll probably be quite a project for Moe.  Hope she is up for the challenge!  =)

Brock - everything you described about your swimming is typical "fear of water" response.  Your kick isn't working because you're stiffened up from anxiety and same with not being able to blow bubbles out of your mouth or nose.  I taught swimming for years and have seen a ton of it.  It's not at all uncommon for begginner adults to respond to the water that way.  So, don't let this discourage you or make you feel hopeless about it.  You CAN learn to swim.

A more affordable option for you might be to contact the YMCA.  The Denver area has a pretty good network of Y's and though they do have one downtown, you can probably find one in a more burby area and skip downtown lol.

Have you checked out the Fitzsimmons pool (assuming it is still open in these days of budget cuts)?  It run by the Aurora Parks & Rec Dept and is on the very east side of Fitz - kind of near the police department.  When I used to workf for the CU Health Sciences Center I would occasionally swim there over lunch.  Never had any issues/concerns with safety.

The Fitz pool was closed back in March (budget cuts).  A shame, b/c it was my favorite pool in Aurora.

Yea I live about 2 blocks away from that pool and drive by it all the time... it looks like it is closed.

I've got an awesome pool right outside my window:

...now I just need some instruction to help me really utilize it.

Moe said she also travels to give instruction and it would be ultra convenient to have an instructor just come right to your pool... but I'm not sure which arm and which leg I'd be willing to part with to pay for that!  =)
