Subject: RE: Elmo ArrestedMy daughter (now 21) is appalled that I used to let her watch him on Sesame Street. I told her I guess it's like how Mel Gibson never seemed that bad, and then he let his freak flag fly loose, so we ALL know exactly HOW bat-sh**-crazy he really is. But really, there were hints of his (Elmo's) narcissism for YEARS ("everybody LOVES Elmo!!!!!"), so it shouldn't REALLY be that big a surprise that he is actually quite paranoid underneath it all. But if you think about it, there is a LOT of mental illness on that street (i.e. Sesame Street) - obsessive compulsive disorder (The Count), a hoarder (Oscar), ADHD (Ernie), binge eating disorder (Cookie Monster), some sort of identity disorder (Grover and his "Super Grover" persona - although given his frequent flights of fancy and high energy level, he might also be suffering from Bipolar Disorder, or even a simple substance induced mood disorder - cocaine or ecstasy, perhaps?), depression (Big Bird - he always seems sort of down to me - and possibly with psychotic symptoms alongside it - Snuffleupagus? Really?Dude, he's a hallucination). And I suspect Bert has Asperger's syndrome - he has very few friends, he has some unusual obsessive interests (a paperclip collection? Pigeons?), and he seems rather aloof much of the time. This isn't me, but it is relevant - http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2010/09/diagnosing-mental-illness-sesame-street.html |
