Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We currently have land line & DSL. I'm sooo tired of sales calls. That's practically all we get. And we really don't need a land line, except that our cell signal is terrible. We have Verizon and I know they have a coverage extender (that helps with coverage/signal indoors). We'd also need internet service...anyone have this? We have smart phones and have 2 GB of data plans, but I'm not sure we've ever hit 1 GB. Most of that is because we use wireless. Any thoughts/experience? ETA: Also tired of weak signal in house. We only have a phone jack that will work for DSL on lower level, but we pretty much live on upper level. Just talked to customer service and they explained that we'd probably have to get the jacks on the upper level re-wired (which of course would cost money) because they are probably only wired as "home run". Whatever... And no, we don't have cable TV and won't be getting it. Edited by lkct01234 2013-09-24 1:31 PM |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have had this for almost 3 years. I like being able to have high speed internet pretty much any where I go if I need it. I have the 5GB plan and rarely go over it. I think it is like $10 per GB over. The only thing you really have to be carefull about is watching videos or downloading large files. I have verizon send me text messages when I get to 50, 75, and 95% usage. So that helps keep up with my data usage. My wife and I both have iphones so we also do alot of surfing on them as well. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The mifi device is essentially a cell phone customized to share the wireless LTE data connection with multiple nearby devices via 802.11 wifi connections. Since you've already had to resort to a femtocell device because of the weak signal with your phones, it doesn't bode well for you to have much success with a mifi in your house. The mifi uses the same signal as your phones, so it isn't likely to be a good replacement for your DSL line. The femtocell essentially connects to your phones by giving them a stronger signal than they are getting from the nearest tower. Then, instead of using the normal cell network to connect your phones to the rest of the world, it leverages your DSL landline to connect via the internet. Maybe you could mount an external antenna for the mifi to improve the signal enough to get an LTE connection strong enough to run your wifi devices and make the femtocell work. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wait... So this would put ALL data usage onto the wireless plan? As in all Netflix, Hulu+, etc? That would pretty much be a deal-breaker, I think. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Correct, if you ditch the dsl line, the mifi would be the only thing connecting you to the outside world. If you stream much video, you are going to run into wireless data plan caps pretty quickly and you don't want to see what your bill looks like when you very far past the caps. |

If you have no phone connected, it won't ring, and you won't get sales calls. Bullcrap on the rewire. You're an engineer, I promise you, you can figure out phone wiring. It's REAL EASY. Somewhere in/on your house, there is a filter that is filtering the DSL from the phone line. Find that filter, and remove it. Now ALL of your phone jacks are DSL-capable. If you really want a land-line phone, connect the filter between your phone and the wall. Problem solved. The other option is to find where the phone is coming into the house, and wire the DSL onto the "line 2" (yellow/black) pair in your phone wiring. Then find/make a "crossover" cable for your DSL modem. Or switch the green/red and yellow/black pairs in the jack where your DSL modem is connected. Lots of options that require about 10 minutes and a screwdriver. |
