“If we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that money, if we wanted to,” Ocasio-Cortez said last week.

Wow, can she really be this dumb? Perhaps she thought NYC was going to write a check for $3B and give it to Amazon.

The Democratic mayor said: “That $3 billion that would go back in tax incentives was only after we were getting the jobs and getting the revenue.”

So now, not only do you not have the $3b to give to teachers and fix your subway, you have lost 25k jobs at an average of $150k/year and all the taxes would have paid. I read that Amazon would have still paid an estimated 19B in taxes.

She is looking more like a one-term and done congressmen.

Presumably they would be paying state taxes in NY but honestly don't know where that came from. Nevertheless.....

25,000 employees with an average salary of $150,000 each paying ~$20,000 state income tax = $0.5 billion a year. Then you have all the other jobs that support these 25k people like restaurants, grocery stores, construction workers, etc.

I found this:

For 2018, it reported owing $322 million in taxes to US state governments and another $563 million in the rest of the world. Under a separate accounting category, Amazon reported "cash taxes paid" -- or the amount of funds actually paid in taxes -- of $1.2 billion last year and $957 million in 2017.

At any rate, AOC made it sound like NY was giving Amazon $3B and that was never the case. I told my wife once that I decided not to buy a new truck for $50k and I planned to use this $50k that I "saved" us by not buying the truck on a new boat.

so i get that the employees are paying taxes, but the idea that 25,000 people would be hired and making 150k a year is total bs

you do realize that it wasn't just a single house rep, it was actually a large grassroots movement of locals upset because of increased rents and cost of living in the area. those people have to pay their taxes and do not like that amazon would not have to be paying taxes that would go towards improving their lives as residents of the city.  its not like AOC said get lost and then amazon said ok sure thing buddy.

Actually, Dave, it's exactly like that. Bezo just let Nitwit know that her policies won't fly with him....and it's his ball and bat. Grassroot effort my arse. Bezo doesn't give 2 sheets about that.....he just goes and finds another playground ...you know, one that enjoys economic developement.

There it is right there, the very roots of socialism. We are poor and we want everyone to be poor. We don't want 25k new high paying jobs coming into our neighborhood driving up the cost of living.
