I have been using clip-in cycling shoes for a long while, but they don't work too well in tri's because of the number of velcro straps, the tongue, etc etc

Just bought some NorthWave Tribal tri-specific shoes (about 70% off on e-bay, brand new!). I will want to have them pre-clipped on the pedals so I can just slide my feet right in. However, I'm a little unsure of how to secure the single velcro straps on each shoe. Is there a 'safe' way to do this? Seems like leaning down to secure these while moving on the bike, and in a busy transition area, might create a hazard.......??

What do you do?

Ride out of T1 with your feet on top of the shoe until you get up to speed before doing the straps.

YouTube video that shows how to get into shoes on the bike.

I have my straps open already, since the straps are out (not towards the bike) no danger of fouling.

Plus technically you won't be "in transition" while doing this, since most events have a "bike mount line" at the transition exit and you'll be a number of yards down the road before you're up to a decent enough speed that allows you to get your feet safely in the shoes.

Not to hijack this thread but.... when I watched my first ever triathlon I saw a bunch of people try to do it this way, where the shoes are already clipped in. And what I noticed was quite a few people either coming up to the mount line or right after the dismount line with their shoes smacking into the pavement which caused the bike to almost hop or the shoe to come unlcipped. After seeing that I decided to put my cycling shoes on in T1 already strapped up then clip in after the mount line.

I've done it this way in the 3 triathlons I've done. Actually, I also do it just about everytime I ride. Walk my bike out in socks, get on and then get in...that way I have lots of practice.

The only time I've "hopped" a shoe unclipped is when I tried to come in fast to the dismount line at the beginning of T2. If I come in and try to actually stop at the dismount line (instead of being off the bike and running right at the line) I have no issues.

edit: I have speedplay pedals. Running in those shoes is just too much of a pain.
