Run
Comments: I started next to a woman in my club who runs 10k 2 minutes faster than me and decided that I would try to stick with her. I haven't run this distance for 3 years so I wasn't really sure how hard it should be and I didn't want to start too fast. The first km, which I think was actually the slowest, seemed hard but my breathing was ok and my legs sort of settled into it. I lost my target woman after 2kms but then gradually caught up again between the 3km and 4km markers and overtook her just after that! I was about 2 metres ahead until the last ten metres when she re-overtook and sprinted for the line. What would you do differently?: Have a spare bottle of water or energy drink in my bag in case I am delayed. I also need to look at my race endings as I am never able to sprint at the end, but seem to recover more quickly than others (who can sprint) - perhaps work on leg turnover? Post race
Warm down: Gentle stretching and very short jog. Chatted to other club members. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inability to sprint at the end. Event comments: An absolutely fantastic race - delighted with my new PB (previous race best was 28:51) and placing (especially as first place in my age group was taken by a GB international). Overall Rank = 139/207
Age Group = Senior Lady
Age Group Rank = 9/26
Pre-race had the potential to affect the race badly: I was delayed at work and had to really rush to get to registration in time, I didn't have time to get water or an energy drink. So when I got there I found a water fountain, changed and tried to calm myself and regain a positive mental attitude.
Jogged for 10 minutes.
