Subject: RE: Shin Splints/Calf Pain/Knee Pain ???? mman - 2008-03-02 4:12 PM I've never had shin splints -- til now. I've got a race in 4 weeks and can't run. I think mine could be from 2 things. I've gained some weight that I'm trying to take off. But, I'm carrying about 10 extra lbs right now, and I was heavy to start with. Also, I changed running shoes. They were fitted at a running store and even have more cushioning than my old pair, but they are a different brand. They feel fine, but I'm going back to my Asics to see if that helps. Until then, my doc said ice before and after the run, stretch, use a rolling pin to workout the knots in your calf and quads, and back off on the distance for a while.
He told you to ice before the run? You shouldn't stretch an iced muscle. It's okay to stretch it if the attachments aren't iced, but if the attachments are, don't stretch it. There are a few different types of shin splits. I am assuming yours is anterior tibialis that is bothering you? If so, a good stretch to do before you run is to sit in a chair with your leg extended and toes pointed. Then, with your foot, write the alphabet in the air - twice! Also, don't be afraid to massage (using The Stick or rolling pin) BEFORE your run either. You can roll the anterior tibialis, just don't roll over the bone. Good luck. I hope changing your shoes helps . Edited by LaurenSU02 2008-03-02 4:24 PM
