Subject: Newbie in Michigan

Hello to all in Michigan,

I'm a newbie to the sport and I'm hoping to make my first Sprint in a couple of months. I've been going over the Hawk Island event in Lansing and the tips in the thread in this forum have been very helpful. I'd like to be ready for that Sprint.

Have to say I'm concerned about equipment and cost. I do a lot of mountain biking and trail riding. Are mountain bikes acceptable/legal equipment for these events?

And any tips for the beginner are welcome. This website has an abundance of information. It's great. As I mentioned in the Introduction forum, I figured I'd keep biking and running and mix in some swimming. Maybe find a few tips online. And then I found this site. Amazing! And glad to see so many positive, active people in Michigan involved in this sport.

A mountain bike is perfectly acceptable for a sprint.  I would recommend a set of slick tires though.

You'll see lots of other mountain bikes at that race, as I've heard its very popular for first timers.  I think they even have a first timer division, which is cool.

Welcome to the sport!

BTW, where do you live?

Good to hear that I can use my current bike. And thanks for the advice on the tires.

I live in Augusta Township. A small town just south of Ypsi. After my training this week and looking at my schedule, I may have to push back my first attempt. The Hawk Island event looks great. Depending on how my training went, there was a possibility it could have been my first event. Don't want to strain or injure myself and there's plenty of other races to come!

Did you decide to run Hawk Island, if so, how did you do?

Thats a tri I am thinking to doing next year, and I am new, so it would be great to hear your thoughts.

In my opinion, it is the best tri for a beginner, in the entire state of MI.

Hawk Island was my first tri as well. Lots of BT'ers were there participating and cheering each other on. IMO the swim in very reasonable for a first tri.

Doing Blue Water in August. OLY! What? Who said that? It's official.
